EGR-valve

Is there someone who nows if it is possible to chutdown this thing on the new civic diezel ?i read on the internet that VAG and FORD and...-owners do it by putting a plate so there can go no exhaust-gas in to the motor .Bennefits are much better response les fuel consumption .The question is will there be a fault on the ECU ???

Why does it recirc exhaust gas into the intake in the first place? Is it for just when the car is cold or is it some emissions thing?

Yes it's to do with emissions. At wider throttle openings (e.g when you are accelerating, bombing down the motorway etc) the EGR valve opens to recirculate some of the exhaust gasses into the engine so that the higher temperatures can get rid of some of the nasty stuff.

It basically just minimizes the amount of crap that gets pumped out of the exhaust. Unfortunately the amount has to be just right otherwise the engine gets the wrong air/fuel mixture (remember it is recirculating waste gas) and this causes problems if they don't work properly. Plenty of manufacturers have had problems with EGR valves in the past and unfortunately they are here to stay!

My Jazz had a faulty EGR valve which did make the car sound a lot 'throatier' but made crawling along in traffic a real pain. The throttle became so lumpy and unresponsive I had to keep slipping the clutch in order not to stall the car. It was fine when you planted the accelerator though.

Egr

Hi, Your Egr Consists Of Three Valves That All Help With The Recirculation Of Gasses. You Will Have An Imrc Valve, An Egr Valve And A Turbo Boost Controll Valve. All Will Have A Direct Affect On Engine Performance If Played With, You Will See They Are All Connected By Greyish Tubing, Dont Disconnect Whilst Engine Is Running As This Will Put The Ecu Light On.

I had an EGR valve go on a Ford. The Stealer told me that they couldn't find the problem and to come back when it got worse. The long and short of it was that the EGR valve kept opening and closing. This caused the other gubbins to keep opening and closing and resulted in a damaged fuel pump because of the extra strain. I had it towed to the Stealer and on diagnosis, informed me that the Pump was on back-order and they already had 6 vehicles in the yard already waiting for pumps and it could take months! I then vented my anger on Fords Customer Service and got mine stripped and rebuilt by LUCAS and back on within 48 hours!
