Opinions of the Semi-Auto 2011 Civic Type S
Im thinking of getting one of these new but have read the older models of the Semi-Auto (iShift) Civic Type S are a clunky/jerky, slow , indecisive drive,
was wondering if people have experienced the type S semi-auto and if it is this bad a drive? i read it can be driven in full-auto and you can use a gear stick to change gears (clutch-less) so would hope this would resolve the problem? does the 2011 model still have this semi-auto transmission flaw? |

I would strongly recommend you test drive one over a reasonable distance and then do the same for the new standard auto and compare them. The later standard auto box definitely drives like a proper auto. Though I have not driven the Honda iShift I have driven a Peugeot with a similar system and it was appalling. There are lots of posts on this forum and views are mixed.

Test drive the ishift and then the full proper auto.
The proper Auto on the 1.8 is faultless. Smooth changes etc. The missus has one and its great. Whats the point of a semi auto? You either want automatic or dont bother. Thats my opinion. The civic semi auto wont change gears like a FERRARI so forget that! lol I did hear a double clutch auto box similar to the DSG used in VW/AUDI is due from honda soon. |

I have run both i-shift and recent full-auto box (fluid flywheel!) versions of 1.8 ES. Full auto box is so much better BUT you really pay the price in fuel consumption...particularly around town. My overall average over about 10,000 miles in each was >37 with ishift but <34 with later full auto.
The full auto is a beautiful drive though... suppose you get what you pay for in life. |

We have covered 400 miles with i-shift, on the whole is not too bad, but I have found a couple of times where it feels like the car is indecisive about what gear it wants to be in, if you take your foot off the accelerator the car starts dropping down gears and the engine starts to rev high as you have to keep up with the road conditions.
I just have to get used the box, and using it as a normal box up and down through the gears doesn't have the same feel without a clutch pedal to depress, we have the 1.4 engine but was good value for money and very pleased with the car. |
