Help needed re mixing oil
Hi all,
Recently had my car serviced and Honda replaced my 0w30 with 5w30. I still have a load of 0w30 here and I'm wondering if I can top up the 5w30 with it? The guy at honda didn't recommend it but I got the impression he just wasn't sure. Both are fully synthetic and the difference between them can't be much, any one got an educated opinion on this? No problem whatsoever - personally, I'd stick to the same grades out of just being pedantic - but it's no problem at all if you were to mix.
My Honda dealer recommended 0w-30. Castrol recommends 05W-30 IIRC I use 05W-40 Silkolene Pro (Now known as: Fuchs Titan Race) See what I mean. |

I have 05w-40 as my main oil in the engine, but recently topped up using 05w-30 that I had knocking around (Castrol edge).
No issues whatsoever. Last edited by TypeRiter; 13th April 2011 at 14:03. |

Yeah I'd agree with that, no real issues - especially on a NA engine.
The only comment I'd make is that it's quite important to stick to the same viscosity and in fact brand of oil on each quantity in the engine at any one time, but this is (in my opinion) down to the different additive packs that go into each oil by the manufacturer. So if you mix oils, you may actually end up diluting the effect of the additive packs and cleaners - but in your situation, as both are fully synthetic anyway and it's only over one oil change, I can't see it doing any harm. |
