Brake fluid change

Ok the time has come... the pads & discs have been ordered. bang goes another saturday

How difficult is it to change the brake fluid when I do the brakes?
Is it a case of keeping bleeding them until fresh fluid gets to the brakes or is there any special kit you need?
soz for the dumb questions, I'll have a bash at most things on a car, but I've never really done brakes before.

Last time I had pads & discs to do, I took the car to my dads & then looked at the car & box of bits until he took pity on me & done them for me..........I'm 40 for gods sake!!!!

your right just bleed till fresh fluid comes through start with the bleed nipple furthest away from the master cylinder and bleed each one (4) in turn getting closer to the master cylinder ... job done

Actually the bleed order is closest to the ABS block and then go anitclockwise (front to back).
The old gen civic went the other way

You need two people for best results.
One pumps pedal to feed new fluid and then presses down as hard as possible.
The other releases the bleed nipple/tube into a suitable container (the greater the blast the better).
When the foots on the floor... you close the nipple... and "ONLY" then the other persons lifts off the brake pedal.

Repeat the cycle.
Make sure the fluid in the master cylinder is always topped up or you'll get airlocks in the lines (and have to do a full flush).
Make sure the flushed fluid is clean and bubble free before moving on.

There is numerous pressure/vacuum bleeders available if you are alone.
They wont do as good a job but are easier.

Dont use the one way bleed pipes.
Air seeps past the thread when the nipple is open so they arent one way ...and you can suck air back up.

Honda use dot 4 defo dont use dot 5 as it will knacker your MC seals. I would recommend 5.1 as its not that much more expensive than dot 4.

It says dot 3 on the master cylinder cap.
Most fit Motul RBF600 dot4.
Some dot5.1

Stupid question: Is the only difference between dot 3, dot 4, and dot 5.1 the temperature threshold? I have uprated pads and rotors and am curious if I would get a benefit going to the 5.1 without having braided brakelines.

Without braided brake lines, you probably won't feel any real benefit of changing to DoT 4.0 or 5.1 ...

Hi I am planning on changing the brake fluid on my 2.2 ES and feel pretty happy with the instructions... apart from as quoted above "just bleed till fresh fluid comes through" - how do I know when 'fresh fluid' comes through?

Thanks

Where is the ABS block, sorry for the ultra noob question, but I only got the car a few days ago, also is bleeding an ABS system the same as a non ABS system apart from the order in which its done ?.........I've never done a car with ABS before.

BTW, I have a 57 plate 2.2 es diesel.

Cheers...Gary
