Doesn't sound right, most members have had to use very little (if any) oil before the first service.

Welcome

On my 1.8 iVtec used nearly 1 litre of oil in the first 3000 miles. Done over 2000 miles since then and haven't had to put in any oil. It seems some cars burn oil until engine beds in.

Offcorse, When an engine is brand new, the sealing of the rings againt the cambers are not well bedded and only after a regular wearing of this rings would the engine not consume any oil. Same thing happened also with my 1200cc motobike.
The best way for a regular wear of this rings in once the engine warmed to normal is to accelerate hard but to to full rev. Fist 500 miles, up to 2500 rev for a Diesel, but from time to time accelerate hard up to 2500 revs, then next 500 miles, rev up to 3500 revs at same rate, and after 1000 miles, you can whop it up to 4500 revs, even at 5000 for perfect run-in, but remember, never stay at a high rev, take it high just the time for over-taking and let go after for cooling, it should be progressif but some how hard in order to finish the machinering of these rings. Hope you understood !o! (I'm french and studied mechanics)

My diesel did use some oil for the first few thousand miles, now got 16K on it and uses very little. Just keep your eye on the level and it'll be fine. Most engines use some oil from new and some use more than others. Diesels do thend to use more than petrol engines though.

Hi Motorman

We have a 2.2 ES

We have nearly done 2000 miles and have used about 3/4 litre of oil. Our dealer did warn us that there may be a higher than usual oil consumption at first. Had a Renault Master van from new and it has used very little in three years - not even enough to bother topping it up! Hoping that things improve cos the oil is on the expensive side

I have a 2.2 EX and can confirm that the oil level dropped to about halfway between Max and Min in the first 3000 miles - after that it has been rock steady at halfway - I would only worry if the consumption didn't decease after 5000 miles or so

(I did run mine in, in the recommended manner!)

Unfortunately that won't work on most modern cars now, due to the use of fully synthetic oils, but many motorbikes (especially older ones) used part or even full natural oil, there is something to do with the natural oil that allows it to bed in like that, but not with synthetic. I asked for my civ to be filled with natural oil for the first service and I'd pay to have it removed and replaced once it was bedded in, but they wouldn't!!!!

Oh and ran mine in by driving it properly from day one, drove it hard, and it hasn't used a drop of oil in over 4000 miles.

Hello to all of you. I have got a Civic TypeS bought in September of 2007. I have covered 8700 km and i observed that the oil consumption is very high. The oil that is being shown on the deep stick is about 1/3. Is that a normal situation? I used to drive a Toyota Corolla 1.3l G6, covered with it 170000 km, with null oil consumption until i sold it. Should i worry? I can't accept the fact that the engine is still new and everything is going to be fine as soon as i change the oil during the first service in 10000 km. I m waiting for your opinion...Thank you.

Oiwnos,
My consumption (for a 1.8 is almost the same as yours, and it remains so after it's first service. I'm a bit disappointed since it's been 20 years since I had to top up the oil between services on other cars.

oil

my 2007 civic 2.2ictdi had its first service in october and has done just under 8000 miles since and 2 weeks ago the oil light came on and needed 1ltr ,that was what i used in the first 12000miles,so the oil consumption has gotten worse ,there is no leak ,it obviously burns it but i have not noticed it

Yes, i fully agree with you, full syntetic oil is'nt good for running in engines, my honda dealer in france told me that the oil which comes in the car after manifacture is thin oil special for running-in the engine, so i do recognize that oil consumption may exist, personally, i too have not consummed any oil and drove the car hard and progressive.

Yesteday i went to the local Honda dealer and explained to the mechanic the situation about the oil consumtion. He fill in 1 litre of Shell Helix 5W 40 fully synthetic and told me that this is absolutely normal and is characteristic of all engines being manufactured after 2004. Also will stop after 2 or 3 oil changes. That' all...

I believe he may have been talking out of a puckered hole somewhere near two cheaks.........I know engines use oil, but 'high' oil consumption should not be a characteristic, my father has a 2005 (?) Range Rover 4.2, that uses virtually no oil, my car uses no oil (the level hasn't dropped in 6000 miles of hard work!), and I realise diesels use some oil, but I think his explanation lacks some reality.

ATB,
Tom

2.2EX CDTi Oil Consumption

I've had my 2.2 EX CDTi since Sep 2007, and yesterday the oil light came on - I've covered 8400miles since new, I topped it up with 3/4 litre and level is now at the top mark on the dipstick.
Glad it doesn't use much Oil, - £17.50 for 1 litre is a bit on the steep side.

I remember back to when I first started driving in the mid 70's - a Gallon of Castrol GTX could be bought for under a fiver!! which was a good job as my early car used more oil than Petrol

I thought some oil consumption was normal for a new engine, especially high-revving ones like those found in the Civic? I've added about half a litre in 3000 miles, so nothing too major - I reckon it will settle down too now the engine is run-in.
