Petrol is all manufactured to a BS standard there all the same.

Petrol conforms to the BS standard as a minimum. This is what you get from Morrisons. Other brands use their own different additives, that make the difference. Using BP Ultimate in my car, for example, make a vast difference.

I must agree with Pottsy. The oil majors spend massive amounts on R&D to develop the additives that they add to fuel and lube oils. So yes, go with the likes of BP and Shell. I tend to prefer Shell Diesel Extra, because Shell doesn't mark its price up as BP does with Ultimate. Although they are now going that way with V-Power diesel.

Having said that, I've used V-Power diesel a couple of times and it's knocked the socks of Ultimate in mpg. However, two tankfuls isn't enough to make a real comparison.

As a newbie who hasn't had a diesel before, and hasn't yet had to fill up the Civic, can I ask a question?

Do BP stations sell 2 types of diesel - Ultimate and some other, cheaper, diesel or do all BP diesel pumps provide "ultimate"?

Thanks, LD

Indeed. And I find BP regular diesel to be much better than Morrisons et al.

am i right in believing BP ultimate petrol has RON 97, and the shell vpower petrol 99 RON? i usually fill up with BP unleaded, but yesterday decided to go with the ultimate, left a dent in my pocket of 105.9/litre but i figured worth a try.

do you think the shell will perform better n give better mileage as its 99ron? i went with BP yesterday as shell is a distance from me.

RON is simply the petrol's resistance to pinking/detonation/pre-ignition (call it what you like). Modern engines adapt ignition timing to be as advanced as possible (more power, better efficiency) until the engine management detects pinking and then backs off a bit.

But, engines also have non-adjustable settings that also affect pinking (like compression ratio). So it may well be on a low-performance engine that the ECU has set maximum ignition advance on 95 RON fuel. 99 would be no use. Likewise a high performance engine (higher CR) might need 99 RON fuel to get the optimum advance, and so 95 RON will cause it to go into low power mode.

I'm going to guess that the Civic is somewhere in between with a CR of 10.8, and 99 RON might be useful (but then it might not). My 968CS had to run on 99 RON and it had a CR of 11.1. Try it and see!

And in answer to "Are different petrol bands different?", this is old, but still a good read:

I've been running Millie's 1.8 on regular Tesco juice almost since day one.

Very happy with what I get.

Performace, speed, power etc.

Tried, when the Tesco's stuff hasn't been available, other brands inc BP and even Jet, and must say have not noticed any difference in any of them......except the price!

It's early days for me as I've got less than 4,000 on the clock, but I've found regular Shell diesel gives me better MPG than regular BP diesel. I haven't tried BP Ultimate because of the price!

Petrol........

I started off using BP Ultimate 97RON and found it OK as far as performance was concerned but without comparison at that stage.

I then changed to BP normal 95RON and found no difference in performance or MPG and it was 10p/litre cheaper.

Then due to a promotion I used Tesco 95RON for 3 weeks and I was finding that it was starting to hesitate at roundabouts and junctions where I needed to come to a stop or almost stop. It was not wanting to take off smoothly.

I then went back to BP normal 95RON and it is back to it's usual self.

No more Tesco's piddle for me

Nothing but shell for our girl
plus it tends to be the same price as morrisons, tescos
etc in our neck of the woods ( think a lot of the local dealers use it aswell)
will try and not change from shell

Probably why it's so cheap!

Had to put some motion-lotion in tonight and I filled up with BP Ultimate Diesel at 102.9 per litre!!! Sore!

That's the first fill from new and I got a touch over 45 MPG out of the "free" tankful that the dealer put in.
That was, apparently, Jet diesel so we'll see if we can get more miles out of BP's finest go juice.

It will run Charles but it wont be good! I run a Maxol garage and am moving to a BP one, after seeing presentations about the different effects what people put into their fuel can do to your car, trust me... I aint goin back to Tesco (do miss the clubcard points tho)
