| This thread is about: Drive by Wire, it's in Engines and Transmission at the Honda Civic forum Civinfo; I've read quite a bit about the Civic having 'drive by wire' throttle. Is this something on every new car these days?... | ||

It's required for the cruise control to operate properly.
I'm not sure if it serves some other purpose. |

My last 2 cars have been DBW and the most significant thing I have noticed is the instant response from the throttle.
You need to have a very light foot for a slow smooth getaway otherwise too much pressure can cause lurching, especially in slow moving traffic. |

DBW allows the ECU to make changes to the actual throttle position, compared to the pedal position. So this includes:
VSA actions Non linearity in pedal response Cruise control (though the old cable system worked very well too) Speed of application at certain revs The ECU needs to see the throttle position anyway, so it also seems unnecessary to have a cable as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electro...rottle_control |

I suppose I was just wondering how unique it was at the moment in the Civics class (which I guess means Focus, Astra, Golf, A3, Octavia etc)

thats what i was thinking, but looking on various websites/reviews it seemed to make a big deal over the 'drive by wire' on the Civic for some reason
Oh well. |

Well, on Civic there's quite a lot of lag due to DBW system (1.8 petrol).
On one side it offers more smoother ride: try to punch throttle fast, and leave it - no 'lurching', compared to 'old' system, like Civic 6th gen. |

DBW should make no difference to the drive, with regard to lag. The only difference is that the throttle is connected to the ECU, which then sends out all of the signals. The theory is that the ECU knows the engine state at all times and can make allowances for air and engine temperature etc. Instead of the throttle doing its thing and then the ECU having to play catchup and make allowances for everything else. Maybe you have a faulty sensor on your system if you suffer lag on a petrol!
I have a Vauxhall Vivaro (Renault/Nissan) Diesel Van that has DBW and its fantastic. The Van does suffer from a lot of Turbo Lag at take off, but that is down to bad Mapping more than DBW. I do love the Vans 6 speed gearbox though. |

(as part of my job) I have driven a lot of cars and 98% precent of them have ***** pedal responses compared to the Civ. (for ex. Vauxhalls there is no throttle response at all! other cars response is very very very slow, the Civ responses very well in some cases too good, then it jerks a bit but if you drive it smoothly there's no problem at all! |
