Oil Consumption on diesels

Just got my car back after its first service and the service guys were very keen to point out that Honda have now suggested checking the oil level on diesels on a daily basis.

I know mine has used a little about 0.75 litre in its first 12.5K but heck - to check daily seems a bit worrying.

Has anyone else experienced oil drinking with their car?

daily o_O what is that service guy smoking?

I check it once a month if I can be bothered. It stopped using much oil anyway.

Oil usage

Mine came up with oil warning at 9K. In went 1ltr of the brown stuff and its not used a drop since. A friend has an Accord with the same 2.2 Diesel engine and his did the same. Strange.

I check mine once a week, but I never had to top it up in the first 12500 miles, so once a day seems to be very very excessive.

1.75l in 8700 miles. I ran it in like I stole it! Dealer said, drive away at it, its warranted for 90000 miles! Is this unusually high oil consumption?

I noticed mine was getting a bit low on the dipstick at the weekend, after 3 and a half months and just over 4,000 miles. It wasn't low enough to get any warnings and 500ml filled it back up. So checking every day is just taking the michael.

If you check it every day you're losing 0.01 l by cleaning the dipstick with a piece of cloth so you'll need 3-4 liter in a year

Check the oil! Isn't that what the light is for on the dash?
I keep a Ltr in the boot and top up only when the light comes on. I usually have to put some in just before a service and so only top it up enough to get me to that service. Its then up to the stealer.

you have recieved some good advice from your dealer there,he is just trying to save you from some heartache because he knows from experience with this engine that when it is damaged due to lack of lubricating oil (usually no 4 big end lets go first & chews up the crank) and you find out due to your neglect in not checking the oil you are landed with a bill for approx £9.5k for a replacement engine that isnt covered by the terms of your warranty. The oil consumption on the 2.2 cdti engine as fitted across the honda range can be very high in the early days of its life until the engine is "fully conditioned",honda technical have said that a consumption figure as high as a litre of oil every 625 miles is acceptable(yes thats 625 miles).this kind of consumption normally occurs when the car is driven at prolonged high speeds ,so for the sake of a couple of minutes check your oil frequently & keep it topped up!!
