i-vtec economy..

We have had the "Smokers" with there poll about economy, so I thought we petrol heads should have one

I did a trip to London yesterday with 5 adults in the car (me and 4 passengers). I did the whole journey, there and back, on one full tank of fuel with a little to spare when I got home (over 400 miles). Indicated economy of over 45 mpg

I guess that about 95% of that journey was motorway cruising - what do you return on a more 'normal' journey mix??

Trip A (which resets with fuel) is 42 at the moment, trip B (same as total odo) is about 35.
I voted 35-40 because that is what I normally get. Not too bad considering the AC is always on and I am enjoying a free-spinning engine revving at over 6500rpm (stick that in your pretend pipe and smoke it, diesel boys)

Oh and keep out of it you old fashioned oil-burners! This thread is for 'proper' engines

OK now I am public enemy #1 with the diesel owners... Maybe i should go into hiding for a while

About 40-41. This is on B roads, City Center, A road mix.

I am sure the old oil burner would probably spin freely at 6000rpm, as the entire engine shook itself to pieces, freely spinning through the air in all directions.

Happiness is now complete! Two days after I pick up mine I will be doing an overnight to the Highlands (610 miles!) - I don't expect the MPG to be exactly wonderful on a brand new car, but from what I'm reading it will be a vast improvement on the Alfa which achieved a best of 32mpg on the same journey....

I'm always driving in and around the city on regular roads with rush hour traffic so it's juat 32mpg. I'll have to check it on a motorway run sometime. I'm kinda embarrassed to say tho...we still don't have all that many motorways in Ireland. Except in and around Dublin....and all of those are full of cars so you're back to stop/start driving again!

We went up to the Derbyshire Dales the other day. Mixed driving as we went through the back roads from Rugby via Twycross, Burton on Trent, Ashbourne. Went through Illam and ended up in Hartington for lunch at The Devonshire Arms. Did a lot of steep hill climbing and stopping to let oncoming traffic pass and slowing down to pass hikers and sheep! Came back skirting Derby and using the M1. Averaged just over 45 mpg in my 1.8EX with i-Shift. Mixture of auto and manual. Did around 170 miles.
I thought that was quite good as I've only covered around 600 miles since new and it hasn't 'loosened-up' yet.

I wonder how much the i-Shift contributed to that impressive figure?

Well, I am still 'running-in' so my right foot probably helped a bit but I am running on 'Premium' BP Ultimate unleaded. Costs a bit more, but they do say 'extra miles per gallon' and I have to say the performance is good. Don't forget as well, I had a lot of very steep and narrow hills to negotiate, both up and down. So, is BP Ultimate worth it? Well I'm going to carry on with it.

Yes Allan (BTW, I'm an Allan too..), I'm a firm believer in premium unleaded fuels - I have traditionally used either Optimax or BP Ultimate. Certainly my Alfa gained smoother and possibly quicker acceleration using either, and that together with 'more miles per tank' made the extra price worthwhile so I will be running the Civic on these fuels.

I'm just wondering if the fact that the i-Shift probably changes gear before you might normally choose to with a manual 'box is helping your consumption figure.....

Hi Allan, I find the auto a bit 'funny' in second gear. Seems to go from first to third with just a brief stay in second; but that could be me as I'm not used to it yet. I find it better if I give a little bit extra on the throttle, it holds second a bit longer. If you push it more it will hold each gear longer when accelerating.

Auto is excellent but using the manual paddles is brilliant. Can't wait until I've run it in fully; nearly there.

My car has done 4500 miles. A says 45mpg (just did a run to Portsmouth from Cheltenham) and B (the life of the car) says 41mpg overall.

Nice!

First half tank used with a readout of 43.7mpg - as it's the height of the holiday season in these parts there's not too much chance to stretch its legs - yet!

I'm well pleased with that, and I've topped it to the brim with Optimax, so I might do a 3.00a.m. Sunday morning trip up the M27/M3 to give it a relaxed blast - at legal speeds of course....

Done just under 600 miles with climate control on all the time reading is 40.6MPG average speed of 29mph journeys mainly west side of the M25 during rush hour now its "run in" using the throttle a bit more readily hasn't really impacted. The mpg which is only 4mpg less than the wife's 1.4L Jazz auto

Just completed my first 1000 km. So far I've averaged 7.7 l/100km.

Just completed my first 620 miles. So far I've averaged 36 mpg.
