oil level

Well my car has done just over 4000 miles. I checked my oil levels today and it needs a top up already. Well more than a top up. Its about 1mm above the minimum line.

I havent got any leaks either before someone mentions that.

Have a look in the owners manual(thats the large deadweight taking up room in the glovebox!) about oil and it says that oil consumption can be up to a litre every 600 miles!!!

I now have 6000 miles on mine and have put about 1 1/2 litres in. It does seem that it's now going down less. My Passat TDI sport always used some oil whereas my previous 1.8T petrol never needed topping up between services.

I think it varies from car to car. I had to put more oil in my 2.2 after 4,000 miles as the level was getting a bit low on the dipstick, although it was nowhere near the minimum line though and only needed half a litre to fill it back up.

I would pop down to your dealer and ask which brand of oil is in the sump or which to use.My '06 2.2 was serviced before I took it from the dealer.Approx. 2000miles later it is still on max and the dipstick has a shell helix ultra 5w40 label on it,so will top up with that when needed

Mine came up with a warning in the centre info display after about 3,500 miles.

I drove straight to Halfords and got 1 litre of Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-30. As the engine was hot, I wasn't going to put it in straight away so I drove home. The warning light did not come on during that journey.

I put the whole litre in and it seems OK so far (another 800 miles).

The low oil warning should never be ignored, but the oil dipstick should be checked, after the engine is off, on level ground and having stood for 3 to 5 minutes before adding any oil.The level should not exceed the max(upper level) on the dipstick.Use a clean cloth that does'nt shed fibres to wipe the stick and then return it fully into its location before removing again to confirm the level.I think also, you will find instructions in the handbook for the correct procedure

I didn't ignore the light, but I felt it sensible to let the engine cool down before adding the oil and my trip home was not far and driven slowly.

I also know how to check the oil level - it was well above the minimum mark.

Was'nt actually sugesting you were ignoring the light, rather, after you correctly having identified its presence, you would first double check with the dipstick before adding oil.Obvoiusly, your second post makes it plain alls well on that score.

normal is about 10000km about 1l or when you drive it hard (till limit) about 1l from 5000-7000km....and thats normal for new cars and for hondas which run almost all the time in high rpms (in vetec 5000-6800rpms)...

i have the 1.8 vtec and have done 16000 miles - first 12500 absolutely fine, no oil needed at all and first service done at 12,400 miles.

Last week oil light on and i've ended up putting 3 litres oil in! Phoned my dealer who'd said 1litre oil every 1000 miles - i questioned why it hadn't used much first 12500 miles and he was at a loss - i have no leak!

I think they diddled me on service and didn't put oil in at all (i usually check but didn't on this occasion, doh!)

Is putting me off hondas - had an Alfa GT before this and Alfa dealer couldn't do enough for me so not impressed with Honda dealer!!!

I have a 1.8 and it has used 1L in the first 8000 miles, I check it every month now and the consumption seems quite consistent, 1/4L evey 2000 miles.
Not very impressed I dont rev over 5500 very often, my old toyota never used a drop of oil between services for 65000 miles.

As someone mentioned the stupid manual says up to a litre every 650 miles, no new engine should use oil like that, even a diesel unless you use it on a track.

You would have to top up the oil every time you filled the petrol up.

But because of the manual the dealer wont even look to see if there is a problem

just one small additional info:
I recommend to always wipe off the dipstick with a piece of cloth or something and then check the level..

if you don't wipe it off you will always see full on the stick and suddenly sometime the oil level light will come up

I have a petrol sport. My oil warning light came on on Sunday afternoon. Bit of a shock as the car has only done 5700 miles.

Stopped the car, waited for 5 mins checked oil - on min on dipstick. Straight to nearest garage for oil - put 1ltr in after a cooling period and is now on max.

But then I read the manual and I do mainly what is called Severe driving...... a lot of my journeys are under 5 miles.

Mr Lippy was not impressed as none of our previous cars used oil - 2 focuses and RAV4 most recently and mondeos before the focuses. Even his diesel works van doesn't burn /use oil.

Going to have to buy a large bottle to keep in garage for future use, but am hoping the dealer may change/top up for free at service due in September.
