Yes. You gain 3 for an I-shift, lose 2 for wide wheels. Diesel drivers gain much more for gentle driving (6-9), whereas petrol drivers only gain a little (3-4). A thrashed diesel is still 4 better than a pedestrian petrol. If you thrash your petrol to keep up with an R, then getting the R and driving sensibly will only cost you 6. A 1.4 is about 5 better than a 1.8.
