Fuel economy survey

I have made a fuel economy survey:

http://www.civinfo.com/forum/survey.php

The survey asks all sorts of questions about modifications to your car, your running in method and how quickly you drive and I understand that this might put a few people off. So, it is anonymous, so your secrets are safe.

Once there is a bit of data there, we should be able to see the effect of tyres, running in, driving style, cruising speed and so on for all the different engine types.

My car can switch between showing MPH and MPG and KMH and L/100KM.
I see some people have filled in the survey probably guessing at the conversion to MPG. There is a button beside the selector for the trip computer to switch between them.

There will be results all over the place, because if you don't filter the results then you are seeing petrol mixed with diesel....

Use the filter, Luke.

Either some of us have filled in incorrect MPG figures or else I have just found out that I am a crap driver where economy is concerned

I just looked at the improvements for next model survey...some of the questions dont apply to me, i cant select my exact model of car(saloon 1.8 SE-S) onlythe hatchbacks are represented
and the suggestions are unexpected.
Like being able to close windows and sunroof with ignition off, I can do and I have keyless entry and can open the boot with the key too.
I thought the hatchback was essentially the same car? what gives? many small differences and others bigger like suspension. I dont have the torsion beam but double wishbone rear suspension instead.
I hadnt noticed these differences before when considering buying looking at the honda website and other magazines, etc. Odd.

Anyway, what was your posted MPG if I may ask, Woolyciv?
Are you way off? I looked at my results and Im pretty much in the highest vote category for nearly every question.

I agree - those figures look spot on for the 1.8 to me.

Agree with Kremmen there ~ those are near identical to my figures.

Just looking at it now, 35/40/42 seems to be where the 1.8 results are.

You have to use the filter.

Click on the check box by the engine question and press Go:

filter1.gif

Then tick 1.8, and press Filter:

filter2.gif

Now all the results are for the 1.8 only:

You can filter for all sorts of criteria - so we can see the effect of tyres, driving style, running in and so on. As before, when the survey dies down, I'll do a summary.

Pottsy,

Could you please insert L/100km in the charts also? because mpg does not say to much for me... (and for lot of other people I guess)

When I made my original post the number of folk completing the survey was pretty low and when I compared my figures to the others (Same model, same engine, same gearbox), there were some MPG figures that looked a little suspect to me (high 30s for town driving - obviously not driven in Preston during the rush hour!). I suspect that someone with a diesel thinks it is petrol engined

Little teaser for the diesel (I'll do it all in a couple of weeks when the submissions die down):

Fuel Economy/mpg

Have now had my 1,8 Sport for 9 months and driven almost 27000 kms - I guess close to 17k miles. Instrument read out is almost invariably between 6,9 and 7,1 litres per 100 km which should be about 14,28 kilometers per litre or in the region of 40,6 miles per gallon. The truth is however that the calculated average is 13,1 kilometers per litre or 37,23 miles per gallon - a difference of 9,05%.

Strange to say, I had the speedometer checked at an independent test station (Danish equivalent of the AA) and the speedometer overreads by between 8,7% and 9,1%, right across the range from 30 kph to 150 kph, i.e. when the speedometer show 100kph, true speed is 91,9 kph.

I am a very happy Civic owner but I truly believe that Honda have pimped the performance figures for the car - both economy, speed and probably the kW and Nm figures too!!

But it is still a great car - as I've said before, every mile is a smile.

Yeah but every car is gonna be like that. So you can still compare across the marques/models as the baseline would be the same.
You have probably experienced this, when you are behind another car and going through a speed trap, you both do say 80kmh on your speedos and you do not catch up with the car in front or get caught from behind either.
The fuel figures are measured independantly of the manufacturers so the baseline should be the same there too. So while it may not be a true 7.1 L/100KM, at least you can know you still get better economy than a car that states it gets 7.6 L/100KM.

By the way, I drive a 1.8 saloon and have done 1000KM, so my B trip says 7.5 and my A trip over the last 250KM says 7.2 L/100KM.

Another thing, I can reset the A trip but can I reset the B trip too? I havent tried it yet as I dont want to reset it at the moment.

You just hold the reset button when you are on the B fuel economy figures. I use them both, the A for the tank mileage and the B for the journey mileage (when on business)

yeah, I know. I use them the opposite way around at the moment and I think I might leave it that way. I havent touched trip B since I got the car to show my overall effciency on the total car mileage and trip A is my journey one or tank one if I wish.
I just wondered if trip B both could be reset like I do with trip A already.
But Ill leave it I think, interesting to see in a years time or more what the overall efficiency of the car is, the longer I leave it the more accurate it should be.
