Other ways of modifying the 2.2 diesel

Just a quick question on modifications to the 2.2 diesel. There are several posts regarding remaps and tuning boxes but other than these are there any other engine modifications that you can make. In the past I have owned Imprezas and I know that air filters, exhausts, BOV's, decat pipes etc make a noticeable difference to performance. My knowledge of diesel engines is limited though, so would I be correct in thinking that other than the remap method one would be wasting their time?

It's a good question - not helped by the fact that no one (yet!) seems to have actually made anything else tuning wise for the 2.2

Gut feel would say that adding a decent air filter, espec one with forced air, would help - although how much it would help a stock 2.2 is up for debate

I'd also, personally, wonder if bigger / better / moved coolers might help - but we're getting into big bucks then

Good Points raised. A bigger intercooler with some kind of remap + freeflow filter would more than likely see a good gain.

As a mechanical engineer I am quite happy to stick with the engine as designed.
You have to remember that these units spend million of hours in testing in labs, rolling roads and on tracks.
I'm sure that they have tested to the limit and then backed off 20% to give years of reliable motoring.

I used to have Escort RS Turbo's that I played about with. We managed to get 190bhp from one buy she lasted 4500miles before going into self distruct mode.
A 170bhp version lasted about 15k but my bog standard 140bhp was past 100,000 miles and still went like new.

Guys,

My first post here... Still saving money to buy Type-S GT Deep Bronze 2,2 I dream of Maybe sooner than expected...

Anyway returning to subject... What I can advise is to go for a trip to Poland and follow in one Slovak's steps in his cooperation with Masters Tuning. He had his Civic 2,2 re-mapped with similar effects to Superchips. After replacement of intercooler for a bigger one they managed to achieve 216,8 HP (graph below) After fixing some minor faults current power is around 225 HP. Impressive...

After re-map and intercooler swap:
ivofina%b3.jpg

Not to mention that owner wisely decided to change brakes with some serious 8 pistons set... (pictures below, quite big size)

Out of box...

Standard to uprated comparision

On car....

You can't put any smaller wheel than 17" after that upgrade...
CIMG0715.jpg

Hope you enjoyed and I shared some light on some secrets about dozy power of 2,2 engine

Apologies if you can't understand my English - just finishing night shift after 12 hrs and I am kind of out of this world now

Take care guys,

Wojtek from York

P.S. Can someone make the pictures smaller, I am too knocked to do it now

Edit by Pottsy: done!

Gents,

VTIDAN: Yes you're seeing correct, 455.9 Nm of torque!

Like you enjoyed what you've seen

Will try to gather some more info together with pictures (if there are any)for us... However you've got to be patient as it's holiday season in Poland now...

The only thing I can say for now is that whole secret is in huge turbo fitted in 2,2 as for that size of engine. Add to that fairly easy ECU to remap and you've the effect as described.

Anyway, since I found information given you in my previous post, that's it my mind is orientated only on Civic - The Spaceship - 2,2 (eventually Accord with same engine).

Watch that space!

english is not my native language...
so to be sure that i'm understanding things right:
the turbo fitted on the civic is big, there is a lot of potential?
do you know what kind of turbo it is? like make/modell...

necromant: Yes you're right. There is loads of potential in that turbo accordingly to the guy from Masters Tuning in Poland.

I have done some research on Internet and found following info on the turbo fitted on Honda 2,2 Diesel. It's only for Accord, but engine is same in both so presumably turbo is same as well:

Manufacturer: Garret
Turbo Model: GT1752V
Turbo Code: 729125-007
Turbo OEM Code: 18900-RBD-EO10-M2

You ask you get!

thx alot, i "googled" for that info a few weeks ago and found nothing...

as for the sports exhausts for diesel engines: here in belgium are VAG diesels with bigger turbos/injectors/intercoolers and so on... 1,9 tdi's with over 200 hp and they use exhausts from

http://www.millteksport.com

the company is from england... as for now they have nothing for hondas... but if a few people are interested and email them... perhaps they make a free flowing ex. system for the civic.

I have never known a manual gearbox fail as a result of increased torque from an engine. The worst thing a gearbox has to deal with is a clutch dump, which will generate much more load that the original torque tripled. So long as you don't seriously abuse the car by side stepping the clutch, it should be fine.

I was warned when I had the engine on my LandRover upgraded (by a very reputable firm) that the clutch life would be reduced - not so much because it wore faster, but because the increased torque will show normal wear that much earlier - in other words - a clutch that is nearing its normal 'end of life' will slip sooner with 250 ft lbs than with 200 ft lbs.

I have had no troubles in over 50000 miles, but I think it was an honest answer!
