Exhaust trims?

Hi I noticed a couple of new civics yesterday and both had the the triangular exhaust outlets blocked off, am I right to assume that these models were the 1.4DSi and that every other model including the 2.2 diesel have conventional rear facing exhausts?

It got me thinking that Honda did not use particle filters in the exhausts like on the new BMW 335d which prevents the need to point them towards the ground.

Yeah, the 1.4's don't have the fancy twin triangular exhausts
1.8 and 2.2 have them. I thought Honda did use a particle filter in the 2.2 iCTDI?

the 1.8's exhausts fit into the triangular exhaust trim
the 2.2's exhausts have the bend in them that all diesel's have and have a small tube attached to them and attached to the triangular exhause trim
and the 1.4's can have the triangular exhause trim as an option but

Think that is right - someone might correct me tho

Interesting observation. I know the 1.4 has them as a non-functional style option and that some models have a different size of triangle (some being longer than others). But I didn't realise that the 2.2 still had the downward bend.

Is the exhaust output of the 2.2 all diverted through to triangle, or does some gas escape towards the ground in say a 50:50 split ?

If all of the gas does get diverted through the triangle, what function does the bend have other than stopping the exhaust condensate from dripping from the fancy triangle and down the bodywork?

60:40 on the 2.2 CTDi
The exhaust splits, the smaller pipe through the triangles, the larger pipe bends downwards to direct particulates/smoke under the car

Well said that man, someone also correctly stated that the triangles are inverted on the S + R models, i.e they are turned the other way round.

Well I've learned something today! I wondered how they managed to keep the chrome clean on the diesel version. Clever little buggers those designers.

CZ you have had me scratching my head with this statement, I have been looking at other owners cars and comparing them, couldnt see anything different until I visisted the Honda website. Now I know what you mean. They are crossed over left to right and right to left .

Thanks guys, some interesting points made there and I also didn't know that the S & R models had inverted exhaust tips compated with the rest of the range.

So Honda didn't fit a particle filter in the pipes but simply split the pipes in two? Neat idea!

Not sure of the inverted exhausts there CZ, just looks like different finishers to me.
Some diesels have a particulate filter but not them all, one of them expensive options.

Thought that's what you mean't but they are completely a different shape.
It does look like they've swap sides, but not inverted that'd be on a Ford Focus
