Diesel Tuning Box

Hi guys.

I've been researching the tuning box option for the 2.2 ctdi.
Basically, a remap would NOT be an option for me, but i was just wondering if anyone on here has actually fitted and run a diesel tuning box from any company.

Did it give a noticeable improvement?
What did the fuel consumption look like afterwards?

Lastly, if you use one of these boxes, is it detectable on the ECU that you have had it plugged in, i.e. ECU codes or similar?

Thanks,
Andy

Is a remap not an option due to cost or something else? The cheap tuning boxes from ebay are worthless and could do more hard than good. IMO, it's a remap or nothing.

Unfortunately because it's a company car i'm not allowed to get a remap done.
That's why i was considering a tuning box as you can just plug/unplug at your will.

and likely invalidate your company car insurance I'm afraid.

the 2.2's are pretty punchy, do you really need a remap or is it just for the thrill of it

i don't really 'need' it i suppose.
None of us really need it, it's just nice to have.

No-one needs a ferrari, but i'd have one over a fiat panda.

If you had a re-map done would your car leasing company be any the wiser ? ( could it be proved that you had the re-map done ! )

I thought that a remap was quite obvious if you took a car to a dealer if there's any kind of problem with the ECU.
Surely they'll find certain codes or something that give away the fact it's been remapped?

The question is not could they find it, yes they could. But are they looking?

well if there was a problem that involved the ECU and the dealer found that the car has been remapped then surely that would invalidate the warranty?

The part of a tuning box i like is that you can take it on or off any time you please

I professional map from superchips comes with a warranty against any damage that may be caused as a result of the map. So you're covered

I do agree with your argument, i would much prefer a proper remap, but that really isn't an option.
I want something that is not permanent.

So has anyone got any experience in using a tuning box?

The dealer can't tell you have a remap by using a computer. He can only tell when he takes it for a test drive and it's pretty obvious then!

I would advise staying away from tuning boxes. At best, they fool the ECU that a certain signal is wrong, and the ECU tries to compensate. As a result the ECU is not seeing real data, and you lose all the protections it offers against overboost and overfuelling.

Best thing is just to either remap, or enjoy the car as standard.

I took it off because when it hit the rev limiter in 2nd, the car then cut out and refused to restart for 15 mins (by which time I'd taken the box out)

But, this was with one particular type / make of box - others may give better results.

see the 'more oomph for your 2.2' thread for more details, and the 'Celtic Tuning' thread for more discussion.

For me - as per Pottsy's comment - ECU tune is the way to go , or leave it as is

My Impreza has 2 maps. I put my foot flat down on the accelerator and press the rear screen switch and presto - standard.

Same again and - UP goes the BHP

Nothing similar available for a Civic remap?

I guess it's possible, question is why? Unless you wanted to hide it during services etc?

handy for those "oh, so you want to play?" moments

but no, nothing available like that for the Civ that has been mentioned in here.

AMD do something similar for VAG cars, where you can select which (of 3 from memory) maps you want by using the cruise control switch.
Only allows you to select with ignition in position II tho, not on the go.

And that's not available for the Civ either

I had this on my last car. They have only one map on and it was not switchable via cruise. It was reverable via the small unit that plugs into the diagnostic port.
Think Revo have system like the one youre refering to. It was not AmD

Hi,

I had a PSI Powerbox for my Rover75 (Don't laugh it was basically a BMW!). It took it from 116 to over 140bhp and was very noticable, used to enjoy beating most things from the toll booths on the M6 toll, acceleration was terrific.

It had 4 speed setting in the box (Digital risc processor), the top one I used you have to get a K&N filter to go with it which I did. I would recommend one. 10 mins to fit, 10 mins to remove.

I've checked the site though and the Civic one is under development but you can read up on it.

PSI Powerbox - Home

Anyway, there you go. I had the box as car was under warrenty and all Chip maps etc never had stats any better. Was sorry to get rid of it, 130,000 miles when I sold it and still great to drive with this on. And no I don't work for them was just impressed.

Cheers
