[Oil] 6 monthly oil change

Just got back from a touring holiday in our civic which proved to be great obviously to a letter from our dealer (lancaster Honda) stating that they had had a directive from Honda reccommending 6 monthly oil changes at £39.95 for the civic (to help reduce running costs) was wondering if anyone else had had this letter.

To help reduce running costs, or boost their profits?

I wonder how on earth doing an extra £40 oil change can reduce costs. I also wonder what oil they're proposing, my dealer charges £11.69 per litre of oil (diesel, admittedly).

Would they like to give you a copy of this directive?

A 6 monthly oil change could help reduce running costs if the oil currently in the car was sludging and past it's usefulness.
Of course, that'll depend on the oil used, the driving routine, etc.
An oil analysis would determine that, so you'd know in general ho long your oil lasts - using the same oil each service.
If you switched to something else, you'd need to do another couple of analyses to see the timeframe/distance at which that oil is no longer working.

Oil these days is so advanced that some car manufacturers have even extended their servicing intervals out to 20K (Citroen C5 petrol for example).

I also suspect 'an administrative error' here.
