Post Technical Hints and Tips

Hi All

As I work for a very well known motoring organisation, I asked our technical people if they could supply us with any hints and tips, that will either help us or let us know of any technical faults

These hints and tips come from either the Patrols at the roadside who have found a problem, or Honda may have advised us themselves. I'm sure that some of you may already know about some of these but knowlege is power

1. Honda Civic 2006 2.2 Common Rail Diesel

The fault was a non start, and the fault codes P1042 P1043 were read. There was no info for codes for Civic's at that time, so the patrol recovered the car to the dealer. The fault found was the inertia switch had tripped (fuel cut off). The switch is located behind the pull off panel at offside end of dash. To re-set it just push the button on the top

2. Honda civic 56Model Year 1.8 VTEC NEW SHAPE

The inertia switch (fuel cut off) is located behind the end cover of the offside dash, so if you remove the covers and your car won't start this is probably the problem. To re-set it just push the button on the top

3. All Civics

The fuel pump location is in the centre of car (obviously I hear you cry!). To access it remove the centre consol (see Pottsy's well documented description) and then remove the 4 screws from the inspection panel. Remove the panel to gain access to pump.

4. News from Honda (Today) Hot off the press

They have advised us that if any Patrols attend the new Civic where the customer has complained that the power steering has become stiff or the EPS light has been on or is still illuminated, the car must be recovered straight to the dealer. Even on occasions where the Patrol cannot not find a fault, the car must still be recovered to the dealer. I have no other information on this but will try and keep you posted.

5. All Civics

Honda has advised us of a possible transponder fault (immobiliser in the key) after the car has suffered a flat battery. This is a software fault and should be recovered to the dealer.

6. All Civics

If the vehicle has a flat battery remove the ignition key from the ignition before connecting the jump leads, to reduce the possibility of the immobilizer re-writing the code and therefore not recognizing the key. If the vehicle fails to start after connecting up the jump leads then it will have to be recovered to a dealer for the immobilizer to be reprogrammed.

7. ishift

All models with a sequential gearbox or paddle change gearshift that are not selecting gears and showing “N” on dash. Check that the brake lights are working, as to select first or reverse gears the foot brake has to be operated and this is how the ECU knows.

I hope this info has been useful and if it has I'll try and keep you up to date with any other issues. If you have any specific questions just drop me a PM and I'll pass it onto the lads in the know. They may not have the answers but they can let Honda know of a possible problem.

Keep smiling as statistically Honda's are by far the most reliable cars on the road

A useful and interesting post! Are flat batteries a frequent bugbear with the new Civic then?

No apparently not; its usually some sort of pilot error that causes it - but if they do go flat you need to know what your doing to save a trip to the dealers

Not frequent, but certainly on the radar according to some of the AA men who have attended mine.

In the latest Which? survey they said that:

"There is just one surprise from Honda – the latest Civic has a poor reliability rating of only 82 per cent. Owners have reported problems with the fuel system, steering and suspension".

I'm sure by that they meant dodgy filler caps and shocks. But the EPS/steering problem is a new one on me.

Thanks for the valuable tips in here, especially the charging one.

I assume that once the jump leads are attached you can then put the key in and turn on the ignition!
