+1 its defo PCV well the rattle is anyway had the same thing so went to honda and they statred up 3 other type R's that were there and they did the same thing. I was told you can change it for around £25 but will make no difference.
Mine also whines i have had a new top pulley put on and new belt( pullley bearing very noisey) and the whine was there before and after the new parts put on.

Hope this is of some use.

Easy way to check is to squeeze the rubber pcv hose quite hard. If the noise disappears then you have your culprit.

I have worked on cars most my life and I still go back to the dealer as they are the ones that hold your warrenty etc and 9out of 10 there correct in what there saying. Also pinching the pipe will stop the noise as you stopping the vapours from escaping the crank there for creating pressure in there so don't pinch to long

SO what do you think about this PCV issue? is it worth fixing?

with regards to this, I have taken it to my dealers and they couldnt diagnose the problem, they came back saying a whining noise was due to my car being low on oil. they had a look at all bearings and couldnt figure out the scraping noise, so as you can imagine, forums hold the knowledge here :/

howcome sometimes the noise disappears?

whats causing this?

also what could be causing a whine when revving - its very distinct, not like engine whine it seems to be slightly delayed
