The one dweezle linked is m14x1.5, I have been looking too, but I think I am being thick, because when I changed the oil, I used a 17mm spanner... so surely it needs m17? or does it not work like that??

No, one size is thread (i.e. M14) the other is head (i.e. 17mm Across Flats (AF)). But an M14 thread wouldn't usually have a 17mm AF head!

See - Screw - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - for ISO lookup info.

Exactly.

M14x1,5 is the thread dimension (diameter and pitch).

This is another good page for screw sizes:
Metrics in Engineering - Metric Fasteners (Screws, Nuts, Washers, and Bolts)

However, a sump plug often does not have a standard head size in relation to the thread.
