Opinions on 2.2 i cdti

My diesel type s gt arrives in a few weeks. I just wonderd what were peoples opinions off the diesel engine. I did a test drive but cant really remember. Do people think its quiet and refined. I am comming from a seat ibiza tdi and found the engine very rough and noisy.

Thanks

Very smooth and different in its power delivery.
I too have come from a TDi engine.

I get my CTDi this week but compared to previous diesels I have owned such as BMW and a Skoda vRS. The civic feels smooth and well powered.

Relax - you'll love it.

When cold there is a tiny amount of clatter on start up, which goes after a few seconds. After that it just is totally smooth with a mild whistle.

yep - 5 seconds after you start it, the only indication that you're driving a diesel is that the red line is at 4.5K revs

well - that and the effortless power. and great mpg.

have you worked out I like it?

Had a 2.2 cdti sport for 5 days now after a lifetime of petrol engines, the thump in the back you get around 2,000 rpm when the turbo kicks in is great. I do miss the growl and the twin power band of my modded DOHC Civic Si, then I think about the economy (28 vs 48 mpg ish) and the thought is just nostalgic

I also have experience of VW TDI's and the Honda 2.2 is far superior, much smoother and linier in terms of power delivery.

It's great

I have the VAG 170PS TDi PD in my Audi and the 2.2 i-CDTi in my wife's Civic is a far more refined engine imho, I guess it sounds a little 'peculiar' (but muted) in terms of whistles and 'whirring' noises but not like a diesel, even when cold.

The power delivery in the Honda is much more progressive, the VAG unit has nothing below 2000rpm (at which point 'all hell breaks loose') and it is easy to get caught without enough power (at junctions) whereas the Honda unit pulls cleanly from low revs.

Finally there's the economy, the Honda (admittedly in a smaller car) delivers at least 8mpg more in any road conditions without the need to resort to an 'economy' driving style.

You won't be disappointed after the VAG unit in your Seat.

I also had a VAG diesel (130 TDI Sport 4motion Passat) before the Civic, the Honda engine is much better in all ways, quieter, smoother, better pick up, more linear power delivery etc etc. The VAG unit is good but does sound like a tractor against the Civic.

Prior to my 3.2 TT, I'd have 2 1.9TDi Audis - an A3 and an A4.

Both engines were good - but the Civ is without doubt better

I have experience of a VW 1.9 fitted in an octavia, its not bad but the 2.2 is far superior. It can be noisy at times in the Skoda.
