Diesel Tuning Box Now Fitted!

Well i've been talking about getting a diesel tuning box for a while but don't have the guts cos it's a company car...
Anyway, i convinced my mate to buy one until he's ready to get a remap instead cos i think he's gonna upgrade some stuff first.

Yes it was a cheap and cheerful jobbie off the 'bay', we got it for £125 posted.
Power Box CR Diesel Tuning Chip FOR HONDA iCTDI - eBay Performance Tuning Parts, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 26-Sep-07 23:04:20 BST)

Anyway, his is fairly new, i think he's got about 7 or 8k on the clock. Well first impressions, definitely seems to give a bit of difference, certainly seemed a bit pokier.... Although the turbo now feels a bit more violent than it was, the car actually seems to be running a bit smoother than before!

We're gonna get it booked in for a rolling road to see if it's actually made any significant difference as soon as poss....

Will post up the results once we've 'rolled'!

Well on that note, my local specialist garage (Sussex Performance Centre) charge a whacking £90 + VAT p/h for their rolling road!!
That sounds pretty expensive for a rolling road, surrey performance only charge £50 all in!
What do you guys think?

WARNING:
If its not digital, it may throw up a fault code and turn the ECU light on.

Thats very expensive for a rolling road session. Typically I would expect them to be £30-50 for a half hour session - do a couple of "runs" and take the average.

You could think about group buying, where you could book a session for a couple of hours and invite friends along who also want a dyno run - this lowers the cost significantly.

The best option by far though would be to sign up to an arranged meet - or even organise one yourself! Keep an eye out on Meetings in the forum for future events. Prices can then range from £15-40.

Good luck!

Lol. Erm, don't think it is digital...
Why would it give a fault? Is it because they'll be revving it quite hard?

pekwah - save yourself some dosh, spend it on diesel, have a blast and meet some people
Come on down to the RR session in Newport on the 7th

On a more serious note - have you read about my experience of a tuning box?
(Particularily the bit where I hit the rev limiter in 2nd gear and the engine cut out for 10 mins...)
That's what robbo was on about

The tuning box I had was overridding the signals to the injectors, and basically got them so confused they just gave up.

Turning the engine right off for 10 mins, and disconnecting the tuning box sorted it out - though having the engine cut out at 60 was a tad disconcerting...
Luckily I was quick with the clutch.

And for note - this was after a rolling road session - but they don't tend to redline the car when on the rollers!

My full(ish) day on the rolling road, whilst we played with the available settings on the box, cost £95
This covered maybe a dozen or so runs.

The group session on the 7th will be for 2 runs (and laminated print out of results) for £35 (£30 if we get 2 more to join in )

Would be interesting to see some figures but I don't expect them to be overly impressive.

Previous experience on PD 130/140 (Skoda/VW)
VW changed the ECU's to give a fault code if overfuelled by a resister mod, which basically the analogue units are. They work by 'fooling' the ECU into believing that the incoming air is cold and dense and so injecting more fuel.
Digital boxes are far more sophisticated and tweak certain parameters within the software such as boost and air/fuel mix. In that respect they work alonside the ECU rather than 'fooling' it.
Hope this helps.

You are more likely to get fault codes.
You might get none.
Hope your lucky
Dont forget that I am coming from a PD TDi engine as opposed to a Honda Common Rail Diesel

So what happens if you do get a fault code on your ECU?
Does it just clear or do you need to visit a stealer?

It needs reading to diagnose the problem, then clearing

So i'm guessing that you get an engine warning light come on then if that happens? Would you get charged by the stealer for clearing it?

Mine cleared itself after being left turned off for 10 mins and the tuning box removed (and it would have been thrown in hedge / stamped on if I hadn't been sending it back LOL)

had 2 services since, and neither dlr mentioned the fault code

but I may have just been lucky...

or unlucky, as the case may be

tuning unit

you bought the box from me,i have done nearly 12000 miles mainly with the analogue unit on ,i am going to get mine dynoed in oct when i am on holiday,i can honestly say i have never had a fault code ,if you read your car manual it tells you how to reset if you ever do get the management light on for any reason, you turn the ignition off/on and start the car 3 times it says and it clears unless there is a fault.on friday my wife arrived home from work after doing around 50 miles ,i could not believe the av mpg was sitting at 67.6 mpg ,this was achieved by sitting at 50mph in 5th gear. for anyone interested pipercross are looking for around 30 buyers and they will produce a performance panel filter ,prices will be around £34.85
