Running in diesels

The following article from the Honest John website is probably the best I've seen written anywhere on how to run in a diesel.

http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/faq.htm?id=32

Summarised:
  • For the first 1,000 miles do not exceed 3,000rpm, but make sure you reach 3,000rpm regularly.
  • From 1,000 to 2,000 miles, do not exceed 3,500rpm, but make sure you reach 3,500rpm regularly.
  • From 2,000 to 3,000 miles, do not exceed 4,000rpm, but make sure you reach 4,000rpm regularly.
  • From 3,000 to 4,000 miles, do not exceed 4,500rpm, but make sure you reach 4,500rpm at least a couple of times a week.
  • After that, no limit, but make sure you continue to hit 4,500rpm through the gears several times a week.
This bears out the theory that turbo diesels need to be thrashed relatively often (Italian tune-up?) to get the best out of the engine. In the case of the Renault DCi engine, the high mileage and hard driven cars had few problems, while the low mileage and lightly driven cars were blowing turbos and engines at remarkably low mileages.

Taking this advice (post running in) certainly helped, so I intend following the same approach with the Civic.

And don't forget to simmer that turbo before turning off the engine folks. If you don't, that's where the trouble will begin

I'd echo that. And if you've been driving the car hard and haven't had a chance to drive it gently at the end of your journey, then leave it for a few minutes to cool down before switching off.

Have a Nissan X-Trail DCi ( Renault engine ) and that is on its third turbo ( 46,000 miles in 1 1/2 years ). I dont hang around either.

2,2 I-CDTI Sport Civic. Much more fun and still on its original turbo

Excellent guide AN, that'll do nicely for us since we picked up the new 2.2 cdti today
