Engine noise at 500 miles

I am getting a very gentle but clearly audible ticking noise from the engine at idle when it has warmed up. A Honda tech told me it was tappet noise but I cant believe that as it has only done 500 miles. This is a Type R, 10 days old, and it was even run in gently ie not done more than 5000 rpm. Is this usual? Comments....

That will be tappet noise - but it's a good thing (tappets with no gap are not a good thing).

I would try taking the car for a good thrash (having warmed it up) and see if that reduces it.

Pottsy's right but what I would say is monitor the noise. Your engines valve clearances are set by hydraulic followers so it is possible you have a lazy one of these but don't worry if you did it wouldn't do any damage. Sometimes dropping the oil and putting fresh in cures this problem.

A good thrash will certainly get the oil flowing so give it a go

Fuel injectors also make a similar clicking / ticking noise. I havent noticed anything unusual from mine, but will have a listen to it on idle tonight.

well I don't know the Type-R engine but at the 1.8 petrol there is no hydraulic stuff. The clearance will be set by a screw.
(must be checked at every 48k miles)
at the 1.8 the valve clearance can be checked by the Honda Diagnostic System.

my opinion is if you will rev your engine hard (will be a good fun) but not going to be a solution for this ticking noise.

are you sure it is a problem? can't you compare it with another CTR?
(make sure both engines are warm enough!)
can it be sg else is giving the noise? some plastic/cover vibration? or alternator?

is the ticking frequency changeing/increasing with the rpm?

That is true they do require checking but the gap will be altered by changing a shim on the top of the follower I may be wrong but I would be very suprised as these are fast reving twin cam engines - screws and fast revs do not mix.

look, this the 1.8 engine... there is no hydraulic stuff...
(I have to check the CTR if there is any... but Honda usually don't use it)
