Yes, I think it is. I think something is wrong here. If you barely saw some oil om the dipstick after only two monts use, it uses too much oil, imo. I find it strange that your dealer told you the oil consumtion was 'not too bad'. Wonder what they really meant by that statement. It doesn't sound very seriously, if I can put it that way. I guess the question is - how many miles in the last 2 months since top up?
and - did they actually add any oil at the service (which one was it - 1st or 2nd?), and again did they actually top it up 2 months ago? - How long were you there? Did they let the oil settle then add the right amount, or did they just glug a bit in a hope? so many questions! |

Approaching 3,000 miles and the level was half way down the hatched area of the dipstick. Added around 250ml to top it up. I find the orange plastic dipstick much easier to read than anything I have had before as the oil seems to darken the hatched area and makes the level clearly visible.

Since the 1st service (9000 miles and less than 4 months ago) it has used 800ml of oil (assuming it was at the max line when they serviced it).
It does get used relatively hard though (over 3000 of the miles has been towing, usually with three bikes on the roof as well). I have not owned since new so cannot comment on running in. |

I have been checking mine, it has now done 1000 miles and the oil level on the dipstick has only gone down about 3 mm. I don't know how much it needs to top it back up till I buy some oil tomorrow.

Checked my 2.2 EX Ctdi at the weekend and the dipstick reported 1/4 full. Went to Halfords today and £43 flippin quid for 4 liters of 0w30 Oil. Almost had a Connery. Anyway went out checked the dipstick again and it appears to be 3/4 full. Apart from the ridiculous price of the oil it would appear that the diesel engine is very susceptible to being exactly level. My drive at home where I got the first measure from is not quite level so I'm blaming that. There are stickers ALL OVER the car saying "Check your Oil" and the dealer told me to check it regularly as well. I suspect this is a diesel thing as I've had 14 Honda's now and none of them used a drop of oil and that included an Integra Type R and Civic CRX Vtec. This is my first ever diesel ! I've now done 1500 miles in this car so I guess from reading here that 3/4 full is not bad.

Not a drop
Checked the level at 1000, 2000 and yesterday at 4900 km (about 3000 miles) and it still is a bit above the high mark. Which it thus must have been from the factory.
I don't drive like a granny, did 200 km/h in Germany already and test the rev lights from time to time, but not a drop sofar. Very good. |

Just a though for you guys with 2.2 diesels which are using oil.
Check around the oil filter housing for leaks. It is the round black cap just to the front lefthand corner of the big plastic engine cover, as you look towards the rear of the car with the bonnet up. (Do you follow that...) Mine started to leak here after 13000 miles and because the oil is so thin it runs away down the front of the engine leaving very little trace. The only way to tell is to look carefully around the lip on the filter casting just by the alternator belt for any trace of oil. Clean it and watch for it coming back. You don't get any drips on the road because the under tray catches any drips. A new cap/cover/lid bit with new seals cures it. Of course it will take two trips to the dealers before they cotton on... |

Like many others, I have been keeping a close eye on how much oil there is in the engine. Now here is a question for you knowledgeable folks.....
When I take the dipstick out of the engine, the car having been standing overnight in the garage on a level surface, the oil level just comes to the top of the hatched area on the dipstick. If I wipe the dipstick clean and reinsert it, and take a second reading, the oil level drops to 2/3mm below the top of the hatched area. Any ideas? Oh, and I am completely sober....with no hangover from the night before! (1.8 ES '57 i-shift with 1600 miles) |

This is normal. The oil will 'creep upwards' during driving and due to expansion when it gets warm. That's why you always have to get the stick out and wipe it clean before you measure it. So the 2nd reading is actually the first. |

Thanks for your response. I know now. In the meantime, have you considered using a hair dryer as a substitute for the sun? I am in the same position re the CivInfo stickers. |

That would be an option, but since I live in an apartment and the parking place is not directly next to my house I would need an extension cord of about 50 meter to get the hair dryer into the car So I'm waiting for summer (which I'm anyway because I hate winter) |
