Mmmmm,
I think my car has used a little, and it was run in from new as per the advice in the Wiki. I have purchased from my local dealer a litre of Castrol GTX Professional, 10W-40. The label on the bottle states the oil conforms to ACEA A3/B3 and others, whatever that means, but that tallies with the recommendation in the owner's manual.

I'm OK for the moment, but if I do top up I shall have to take care not to overfill.

My 1.4 engine doesn't use any oil, i.e. it's not visible because level is always the same bit above the max indicator. And there's no water in my oil, it gets hot enough, I'm sure about that !
I've driven on German Autobahn at topspeed for 30 minutes, no oil loss

( yes, my dealer filled up with too much oil, I complained, but he said it doesn't matter. Well I don't like it, the next oil change if they do this again I will let them remove some)

Fantastic built engine!

The GTX is just a regular motor oil. If I was you, I bought something else. And definitly not a 10w40 spec!

Agreed!

Regardless kind of fuel or size of engines, Honda are famous for their engines. They're all nice pieces of engineering, no matter what. But I have to add that it's the petrol engine technology that has built up their good reputation over the years...

Ps. I don't want to start another petrol vs diesel fight on here, I'm just pointing out facts.

Apologies for being off topic!

I checked today to be sure, and I added 1,7 liter in about 7200 km. To me that souds like a lot. This is my first diesel, so I don't know what to expect. I know my brothers BMW's hardly use any.
Some people say that this is ok, because other (VAG) diesels are far worse. But to me that is not ok. I bought it second hand, and it had 35.000 km then. So it's not the "running in period" any more. Also, it's gonne be a costly operation, since it's 55 euro for 4 liters. And I don't like the thought that I always have to carry around a bottle in the back, just in case...

It's a magnificent engine, this 2.2 diesel, but this oil thing really bothers me.

Its bothering me as well just how much oil the engine is needing.

The oil light warning is useless as well. It comes on even when its topped up. My dealer is having to adjust it.

I know somebody who's first 2.2 cdti diesel was also a second hand and uses some oil.
This person's bought a new car with the 2.2 cdti diesel and now there's no need to fill up between services.
It al depends on the way of running in. Most people who are new to modern Diesels or don't have much experience with cars in common, are to rough and not carefull in the running in period. They can't wait to test the topspeed of a car or the 0-60 test.
It's not the engine's fault however, but this peace of high tech is sensitive for the first 5000 miles of running in period. Drive it as it's your own. I know that company car's are not always handled carefully. Unfortunatly

I have just topped up the oil for the first time and brought the level to max. but it still only needed 0.25 litres of oil. (3,600 miles covered)

Does anyone know the differences between the Accord CDTi and the one in the Civic?

In What Car Helpline this month there is a story about a Accord driver who needed a new engine as he only checked the oil monthly.

It stated that there was no oil level light on an Accord, but I have had in the check control a low oil level warning (the level was still above min, so it is a bit cautious. The scary part was the cost of the replacement engine even after Honda chipped in - I will check tonight and update.

Mine does not appear to use oil greatly (0.8 litre in 16000 miles that I have owned it), and that includes some very hard use, in for service a week on Monday - lets hope the low use continues.
