Honda Assist will uplift the car to a garage but that's it, they won't syphon any oil out or anything.

I did do about 4-5 miles after I filled up, and didn't notice any issues - would I have noticed a problem before then, or is this something which could cause a problem after more miles?

I really needed to use the car tonight as well, which is a royal pain in the ass. You live and learn I guess

Well if anyone can assist, it would be appreciated.

Obviously I now know that too much oil is bad, but I thought that since Honda said I urgently needed oil that putting 4litres into a 5.5litre tank would be fine.

I guess my main question is - if there is around an inch between the min and max markers, and I'm an inch above, does this prove a major problem? Or is the max just a guideline, and 'x' above it will be ill advised, but still safe.

No Max is really max. So the optimum level would be on or just below the max line.

I don't know exactly what could go wrong if you overfill, but a search here in the forum or with google should give you some info I think. Maybe there is a wiki (not the one here) aswell.

There is a thread here:- Overfilled motor oil? - Yahoo! UK & Ireland Answers

Any garage or even tyre fitting centre should be able to drain some oil for you. All you need is access to underneath the engine and a couple of spanners to remove the maintenance panel and the drain plug.

It depends on the particular model/engine but the main effect of putting too much oil in is that the crank is runing too deep in it and will throw it around so much it can pressurise up the side of the piston and into the combustion chamber and be burnt or burst seals at front and rear of crank. High revs will almost certainly do that. With an older design engine, I might risk driving very very gently at low revs a short distance but I don't know enough about these engines and their very thin oil (which will get through spaces thicker oils won't) to advise.

On the main thread topic, the confusion seems to be whether any diesel Civic now has a DPF as standard. The handbook is too vague, talking about cars with and cars without and not clearly saying "since....a DPF has been fitted". Whether or not later cars have a DPF affects which oil spec is needed.
The various grades in the handbook all have no upper ambient temperature limit so the deciding factor is how low a temp you are going to experience. 10w cut off is -20C and 5w cutoff is -25C. Anything lower and 0w required. Make should not matter as long as spec is same (my local dealer uses Elf).

Yesterday the oil warning sign came up (without an exclamation mark), put in 1 litre of 0W30, 15060 km's.

Still not a drop

After 17000 KM in exactly a half year the level is still at max, so oil consumption is zero.

managed to make it to 27K without adding any oil after the 12K svc - up to 12K I was constantly topping it up. At last its settled down as promised.

Shame they have put the 'wrong' oil in again. Gone from 0W-30 to 10W-40 (think they've changed from Castrol to Shell as well)

Last time they changed the grade I got them to put in the oil they recommended when I collected the car!!!!

(What is the right grade? - opening seperate thread)
