Reverse Gear

Have any of you experience the following: I was putting the car into my garage and reversing back, then I decided to go forward to straighten up, and while moving forward and decided to switch to reverse while moving, manage to put the gearing half way in reverse. The gear stick got stuck in this position and I had a job taking it out!

I believe that the car has a safety feature stopping you from selecting reverse while moving forward? If so I should stop these bad driving habits!

Yes it has - what else would prevent selecting reverse during a normal drive in this kind of gearbox

OK thanks, I thought so. I must remember to completely stop before trying to put the car back in reverse, I thought the gearbox had broke!

On my i-Shift, it doesn't always find reverse!

Then I have to select neutral and start again.

Make you look a right prannie when doing a three point turn or similar.

I was looking at the manual and it does state that you have to be completely stationary before selecting reverse, or it wont engage gear. With me I must of released the foot brake as I was putting it into reverse. and rolled forward. I wont be doing that again!

Its a clever system as when you are driving you cant shift the gear level right across to select reverse, it just does not go that far unless you are stationary and completely stopped.

It did it again, the car was totally stationary and I went to put it into reverse, it started to go in and then the gear stick just got stuck. I could nt get it into reverse and had to yank it out back into neutral. It worked the second time.

I dont think that the dealer can do anything as its only the second time its happened in 2 months, and I cant reproduce the problem. The only common facter is that it was pretty cold outside on both occasions. I'll call the dealer tomorrow, see if its a known problem????

Interesting side fact: the 2.2's gearbox has a syncromesh reverse gear, but the 1.8 does not. Much handier to have full syncro reverse, as you can engauge it without coming to a total stop. You also don't get that annoying whine sound while using reverse gear.

I wonder why they're different?

I think that in this case its the auto lockout thats causing the issue, when the car is moving forward, or when it thinks it is it locks out reverse gear. This stops you from pushing the gear stick further along to select reverse. In my case its decides that you are moving forward as you are selecting reverse and sticks. Thinking about this, it may not be the actual gearbox but maybe a senser problem, its only happened twice, once a month so far.

Mind you the gear box is still stiff as its only 2 months old!

I called the dealer today and he told me to keep an eye out on it, and it was nothing worth worry about! Also said that the gearbox should become looser as the linkages wear in. I've only done 2000 miles. I bet all this cold does nt help!

Well, just thought I'd put my comment in here, seeing as someone else has experienced this... Had my Type R for 2 days now, and leaving work today I had the same as you describe - the gearbox just locked up half way into reverse. I had tried to engage it whilst stationary, so shouldn't have locked. However, for the life of me I couldn't get it to pop out again, so I had to turn off the car, lift the clutch up, depress the clutch, fire up the engine again and sort of tugged it back into neutral. I looked a right wally in front of colleagues. It had better not do this again else Honda shall be getting a call. I'm just pleased I have 3 years warranty!

I'm taking the car in to the dealers tomorrow about my wipers creaking and the relay clicking, I will mention the gearbox to them and will let you know! The problem is that its only happened twice in over 60 days! I would of thought that Honda would of been better than this!

If you could let us know what they say, that'd be great. Being that my car is only a few days old, my plan is to wait a few weeks to see if anything else crops up before reporting back to Honda. Haven't noticed anything else as yet, touch wood!

OK. I've now clocked 2500 miles and the engine has loosen up. I did call the dealer about the gearbox last week, they told me it may be because the gearbox was still new and needs to wear in a little. they told me not to worry! Who knows, but I will talk to the dealer about it again!

I have just returned from the dealer, the mechanic told me that there was nothing to worry about. He said that the gearbox sticking could be down to the oil and the parts in the gearbox still being tight, as its still new. In time everything should loosen up. He also said that you can try placing it in 1st, and then reverse. I suppose thats good news!
