can this be true? (fuel filler arrow)

All if not most modern cars have a small picture of a petrol pump in the fuel gauge.

I have just been told that this picture always represents the side of the car that the fuel filler is !

Therefore ours should have a picture with the fuel nozzle on the left?

Anyone have access to a range of cars to confirm this?

On a few cars (Toyota I think) I have seen a little arrow.

Something like:
<- Fuel

This is great in rental cars where you don´t have a clue.

Personally, I don´t understand why not all cars are designed to have the fuel filler on the driver side (obviously for LHD ! ).
The Civic does - great

My theory is that cars from left-hand drive countries has the fuel filler on the left side, and from right-hand drive counties on right side.
The theory holds for our former Fiats, Citroëns, Subarus and the Civic.

If the fuel fillers were all on the same side then the queues for the pumps would be horrible. Having them mixed means there are always people who can use either side of the pumps.

Civic is from the UK (RHD) and has fuel filler on left hand side??

Other Hondas seem to vary.

MB tends to have right hand side.

Histroically there have been a few insteresting cases which don´t work with that theory, like Jags dual tanks in the 70s and 80s and the old US standard of under the rear number plate.

Also, "cars from", what would that mean in this every more globalised world with sharing of parts and R&D and mfg all over the place?

A few others (from photos), all current cars:

A bit confusion here - I'm referreing to which side of the road you are supposed to drive.

Walked out to the car.
In the freezing cold.
All the way thinking - Mr Potts has been playing with Photoshop again just to have a laugh at me running out in the cold.

But, no.

It is true.

The arrow is there!

Never thought about it.
Or maybe I just thought that it was pointing to the fuel gauge saying this is the fuel gauge....

It's not that clear - I, er, only noticed it recently.

My old Volvo was on the left as is my wife's Skoda (and my son's and daughter's)

I think it depends on the LHD/RHD on SOME cars

It is, of course, safer to have it on the nearside in case you need to fill up by the side of the road (because you ran out of fuel ) that way you don't run the risk of being 'clipped' by passing motorists)
