can this be true? (fuel filler arrow)
All if not most modern cars have a small picture of a petrol pump in the fuel gauge.
I have just been told that this picture always represents the side of the car that the fuel filler is ! Therefore ours should have a picture with the fuel nozzle on the left? Anyone have access to a range of cars to confirm this? |

On a few cars (Toyota I think) I have seen a little arrow.
Something like: <- Fuel This is great in rental cars where you don´t have a clue. Personally, I don´t understand why not all cars are designed to have the fuel filler on the driver side (obviously for LHD ! ). The Civic does - great |

My theory is that cars from left-hand drive countries has the fuel filler on the left side, and from right-hand drive counties on right side.
The theory holds for our former Fiats, Citroëns, Subarus and the Civic. |

If the fuel fillers were all on the same side then the queues for the pumps would be horrible. Having them mixed means there are always people who can use either side of the pumps.

Other Hondas seem to vary. MB tends to have right hand side. Histroically there have been a few insteresting cases which don´t work with that theory, like Jags dual tanks in the 70s and 80s and the old US standard of under the rear number plate. Also, "cars from", what would that mean in this every more globalised world with sharing of parts and R&D and mfg all over the place? A few others (from photos), all current cars: AM V8 Vantage - left Audi - right Bentley Arnage - left BMW - right Bugatti Veyron - left Cadillac CTS - right Cadillac XLR - left Chevrolet (Daewoo) - right Chevrolet Tahoe - left Chrysler 300C - left Citroen C3 - left Citroen C5 - right Ferrari 599 - left Fiat (most) - right Fiat Ulysse - left Ford Fiesta - left Ford Focus & Mondeo - right Hyundai - left Jaguar - right Jeep - left Kia (most) - right Kia Carnival and Sportage - left Range Rover - right Lexus - left Lotus - right Maserati Spyder - right Maserati Quattroporte - left Maybach - right Mazda - left Mitsubishi - left Nissan Primera and X-trail - left Nissan Qassai - right Opel / Vauxhall (most) - right Opel GT - left Peugeot 307 & 407 - right Peugeot 107 & 207 - left Porsche - right Renault - right (actaully a Renault is not right, it is always wrong) Saab - right Seat - right Skoda - right Subaru - right Suzuki (most) - left Suzuki Grand Vitara - right Toyota - left VW - right Volvo - right Last edited by FWH; 2nd November 2007 at 11:01. |

Walked out to the car.
In the freezing cold. All the way thinking - Mr Potts has been playing with Photoshop again just to have a laugh at me running out in the cold. But, no. It is true. The arrow is there! Never thought about it. Or maybe I just thought that it was pointing to the fuel gauge saying this is the fuel gauge.... |

My old Volvo was on the left as is my wife's Skoda (and my son's and daughter's)
I think it depends on the LHD/RHD on SOME cars It is, of course, safer to have it on the nearside in case you need to fill up by the side of the road (because you ran out of fuel |
