Running on Tesco Cooking Oil

I keep reading in the press that people are running there diesel cars on cooking oil from Tesco/Asda! is this correct.

Apparently you bung in £5 of Derv and top up with the cooking oil, runs with no problems?

Asda sell the cooking oil for £0.68/litre Vs £1.03/litre Derv.

Anyone tried this?

Only in an older less 'precise' engine, not the one in the Civic. I can see an old diesel banger running it fine, but I don't think the modern ECUs will like it much.

Especially not a Civic, if you read the manual, it says not to, and it also says not to use Bio-ethanol or whatever (rape seed oil etc.).

As all fuel becomes weaker and more environmentally freindly (how it can be better for the environment when you have to use more of a finite resourse is beyond me), I feel the bio component in all fuel will increase.

I agree I would say it would be o.k for an older diesel engine
but not a brand spanking new one

Frying tonight - I don't think so

Had some friends who did this some years ago now in an old Seat I think it was. Anyway one of my friends was a mechanic and these friends took their car to him because there seemed to be some problems with the car. Not being mechanically minded I can't tell you what was wrong but let's put it this way - the car was ruined and they needed to buy a new one or a new engine, something like that anyway. So my advice would be not to get involved and protect your spaceship from frivilous penny pinching bearded people.

If it did work you would need to consider tax etc.

You can use 2,500 litres of rapeseed stuff a year, tax free.

wonder how you prove how much or how little you have used? only reason I ask is that I'm often at the car auctions and can remember a year or so ago customs and excise checking the vans for illegal fuels, now I might be wrong and they may have been looking for red diesal

Probably checking for red diesel. My dad's a builder and they're often going round the sites checking vans for red diesel, coz some idiots use the red diesel which the diggers run on

Yes, the department that checks cars for this sort of thing is one of the few civil service departments that is expanding. And it is considered a more serious offence than a lot of people imagine.

bio fuel

it is actually legal now to use up to 2500 litres of veggie oil per year per person in your cars /vans,i have spoken to one of my buyers who makes/sell bio fuel ,at the moment bio fuel sold at the pumps is up 5% bio but the government is wanting bio to be at least 10%,most car manufacturers are working on this as the emmissions are lower with bio, volvo hope to have a bio car that will run on a 50% bio mix very shortly, before the change in the law on useage if you registered it would cost you 26p /litre in duty,i know from a friend who runs his 2.0 dti vectra that it starts better and runs smoother and also returns better mpg on veggie oil,he usually puts 1/4 tank diesel and fills up with veggie oil,the biggest problem people have is that due to veggie oil being cleaner than diesel it really cleans out the pipesand this can cause filters to block initially but after 2-300 miles you would not get any probs,if you have a second car and it is an older derv give it a go
