Oils well that ends well

After reading multiple threads about this subject, I know its been talked to death, but I`m afraid I still need some advice:
I spoke to my dealer about what type of oil to use in my `57 plate 2.2. He said that so long as it was synthetic it would be ok. He also confirmed that my car has a DPF. Looking on the castrol website it states that the oil to use is Castrol Edge (turbo Diesel). Is this the one to go for?
Also, (and I feel a bit of a dumbass asking this one), when is the best time to check the oil - When the engine is cold, or after a run out? Which gives the best indicator of oil level?
Thanks in advance.

A warm engine left for 3ish minutes.

The thread on DPFs suggests that these are definitely not standard on UK cars - did you have as an optional extra?

No, to be honest I didn`t put too much credence into what he said, (he told me previously that he has only worked at Honda for acouple of months) I personally don`t think that my car has a DPF, but the castrol site does recommend different oils for `06 `07 cars.

He sounds like an idiot, I would ignore anything he tells you....

I've not heard of any UK civics having a DPF, surely you wouldn't add it unless you had to?

I'm guessing that '06 Civic might mean the old one and '07 (being the first 'full year of production) means the new civic?

Its quite striaght forward really, check out the manual. On my CTR its 5-40w oil and they recommend semi-sythetic. You can use any brands of oil as long as they meet this specification. I would use fully-sythetic but its suppose to be more watery and can do more harm than good. I'm using Mobile 1 which is apparently what Honda Enfield use.

Why not just try plain old ordinary water like these guys did!! Check this You Tube film out. Its astonishing. Just don't try to make a warranty claim if you do.

The guys are having some fun but wait and see what they do to try and kill the car. It just wont give up without afight!!

I love my Honda!!

Water is a perfectly good lubricant...it's the sole lubricant for the external prop shaft bearings on ships.

It's just that it's boiling point is a bit on the low side for automotive use!
