fluctuating 'miles left'

Does anyone else have this?

I tend to leave my info screen on the 'miles left' - if only cos it's more interesting than who has their set belt on.

Yesterday, after some town driving, I'd done about 180 miles, and showing 350 odd left - which is nice.

This morning, dropped wifey into work.
This is 1/2 mile fromhouse to dual carriage way
15 miles of speeds between 50 and *cough* 80
1/2 mile of A road

Way back is different, to avoid inbound queues into Cardiff
20 miles of twisty back roads at between 20 and 40

round trip - 35 miles

and the 'to go' now shows 240 (with 215 done)

still not bad, but not anything like as good

bit more road town driving tonight to drop daughter round to friends
total trip couple of miles, in town traffic at about 8pm

and now the 'to go' is back up to 290...

confused and confuddled of Cardiff.

I find the Average MPG screen more fun, try to get a new high score on longer runs

The miles left must all be based on the same calculations as the average mpg and that can fluctuate like crazy when you've just filled the tank or within the first 0-xxx miles, gets less and less but depends on your long/short runs etc....

Same here, it calculates the miles / km left from the MPG usage numbers. If you drive at 5,6l / 100 km (sorry dont get your weird miles then the number is abt. 800 km. If you drive in town the usage is 8,6l / km and the numbers go a lot lower..

Ive had the same problem, fill the tank up and it usually says I have 590 odd miles to the tank, after a 100 miles ir goes down to 400 odd.

As mentioned I think it is linked to the MPG figure, makes sense because it is saying at 55MPG you will have 500 miles left to the tank, and 44MPG you will have 340 etc etc.

Is annoying to be honest!

You need to bear in mind that it is most likely making a calculation which is always going to be an average, I have found when it gets to 0miles you can still drive it! (I went 5-6 miles on top and got scared) Cornering and hard acceleration will delay it from producing an accurate figure and it can sometimes take a while to update.

I think that civicg is right.

The average economy figure will alter the miles left figure

Yes, absolutely, exactly what I thought - which is why I was surprised when the total went up after a few miles of town driving (3rd gear max), and down after a 30 odd mile run in 6th at tickover revs...

Did the trip to London today - as per the last 3 tankfuls, it would have run dry at 470 miles

which I'm quite chuffed with

I presume at some point you will eventually do what the computer says ie 0 miles when it show 0 miles !!! When do you call its bluff ? Reminds me of that TopGear episode when Clarkson drove that Audi A8 diesel from London to Edinburgh and back and even the mini camera in the fuel tank seemed to show it was empty why he was still somewhere on the M1.

DUNCAN - how much further are you going to chance it !?!

In response to Newboy above, (really must learn how to add an attachment!), Clarkson didn't register because he's up his own a*se.

Whatever car he recommends, I'd avoid like a bargepole!

Oh OK Jobo

I certainly wouldn't base any buying decision based on what he says but I'm sure there are some cars he likes that I would agree are good (not that I could ever afford any of them)!
