I wonder why it isn't more after a remap, is there any electronical "gag" preventing higher speed? If you remap say from 140 to 180 HP you should be able to go about 250 km/h (not saying either is good for the car - but theoretically...)

Well, after remap, my car gets to that speed a lot quicker , and I've felt like engine could go more than that, but as far as I know it is the gear-box and shift transmission responsible for that... am I right?

Yes, quite a few engines are limited by the gear box etc. mounted to it, like the RS Turbo I believe, that was limited by the crappy ford gearbox on it, before the tuning company started doing full conversion rather than just the engines, this changed of course

Right with a carefull choice of words, bu tim sure you get the drift!
Say if two honda civics approach a motorway slip road parrallel to each other, one a Typre R @ 200BHP/142lb and the other a Diesel @ 190BHP/300+ lb Ive never driven the Type R but 300lb of torque is a hell of a lot!!! Maybe its a no brainer but just wanted to satisfy my curiosity |

If the type R driver is prepared (ie in 2nd at 40 mph) he will win. Otherwise IMO the 2.2 will get ahead before being caught as it runs out of revs after the type R has dropped a couple of gears!! PS Pottsy has a video of that somewhere I remember |

I would'nt have thought there would be much in it as remapped the diesel will be pushing out close to that of the Type R but with a lot more torque. However the Type R will have more revs to play with.
Would it be fair to say that in normal driving @30, 40 and 70MPH overtaking, undertaking |

It's quite simple - for 2 cars of the same type and weight, more bhp = more acceleration. Torque is misleading because it is multiplied by the gearbox and final drive, and high revving petrol engines will multiply torque by about twice as much as a low revving diesel. To eliminate the gearbox effect, you can multiply the torque by the revs. This new comparison amount is called, er, power.
At mid revs the diesel has more bhp than the R. So at mid revs the diesel accelerates harder than the R does at mid revs. But at high revs the R has more power, and so accelerates harder. The net result is that a standard R is a bit faster than a chipped diesel (as you'd expect). ![]() |
