I would assume that once the mold is made, then the manufacturer in China would just run off so many blanks, it would then be upto us individually to take out the circuit board and mobilizer chip and fit them to the new key.

(I voted yes, too)

Thats the plan. All we would have to do is slip the circuit, battery and immobiliser chip into the new flip housing. The key blade would have to be cut at a local hardware store from the original so it works in the ignition. No need for any programming or visiting anybody else.

Would a local hardware store be able to cut these keys?

Also, surely you are looking at a fair bit of investment in the plastic tooling (even in China)?

Not too sure about the cutting, I will look into it.
As for the investment, you are right it will require me to put in a wedge, which is why I have run the poll to get an idea of how many people may be interested to ensure I can break even with it. Hopefully it will work out.

Have you had the Civic key cut?

At least some places have problems with cuting some modern car keys. Special equipment needed etc.

This may not apply to the Civic.

The bat always goes dead on them then how do you get into your car then?
Follow the Lexus lead...........

Their keyless system involves having the unit on you which will automatically unlock the door as you approach. If the fob battery becomes flat then there is an emergency concealed key within the fob unit anyway.

Similarly the outer door keyhole is also disguised behind a removeable plastic clip, so can get into the car via normal methods.

I am really not bothered either way,

Non of my previous cars had a flip key so i have never been used to having one!
My brothers two Skodas had flip keys and he could not go back to a standard key!

I suppose it depends on what you are used to

OK, well these may not be too good and I am sure others can do better but, since noone else has had a go yet, here are my efforts:

First go with a white background, second go pencilling the background to black.

Just an idea:
