Not actualy a 'Honda' Flip key, it's an Accura one but that's splitting hairs.... also from what I can tell, it only supports the Type 5 security system, and the Civic has a Type 6 system.

Got my flip key off eBay today and set about modding it to accept the Civic remote innards (some interal plastic needs trimming to get it to fit properly). Tomorrow I'll get the blade cut and move the transponder from the board into the body of the plastic itself. One thing that's slightly annoying about these key housings is that the actual blade spring 'flip' mechanism is a bit on the ropey side. I may get one of the many genuine VW keys off eBay and set about modding that. Depends on whether I can make the blade flip a bit smoother.

Just spoken to them and was told they are finalising the design before attempting to produce the key. I appreciate some of you maybe getting bored but when this thread was started a month ago it was only an idea. I never promised an overnight result. Being so far away from the company I can't exactly visit them and view progress, push them along as I would like to so I'm afraid we will just have to wait it out.

However, as Stef has pointed out it seems that the mod will involve moving the transpnder chip off the circuit and extending the connections as close to the ignition side of the key as possible. I am still up for it and will continue to see this project through as far as possible and hopefully get a result.

For those who are still interested, I am afraid we are just going to have to wait, or settle for the key off ebay (which seems like an easier option atm).

For those getting bored, you need to find something a bit more entertaining, but you already know that. MS Flight Simulator X is well recommended, I seem to be hooked on it at the moment, even though landing with the runway still in sight seems frustratingly difficult.

Quick question, what type of wire are you going to use to connect the transponder back to the board?

Pretty competent at soldering but no clue what size wire to buy.

I was going to see what I had lying around in my toolbox. I have a shed-load of wire etc from my PC modding days, so some standard stuff like you would get on a Molex connector or similar. Doubt it needs anything too fancy.

I definately need to adjust the flip mech to make it smoother though.

- Use any very thin wire (big wire could destroy the PCB pad)
- After cutting and appying silicone grease to the mecha, the key is very very very smooth, mine flips perfect with the spring only half tension compared to original tension.

Come on ! Ordering a piece of wire on Ebay ?
If you do not have even a piece of wire in your house, do not start to take appart the original key.

After reading all this and looking at the size of the flip key, and the potential of voiding or infringing any warranty; I think I'll just stay with the standard key, thank you.

I wouldn't worry too much about infringing warranty - what's the worst that can happen?

It's the size and the functionality that I'm concerned about.

They dont have to order it, I put it up as an example!

but after installing a remote start alarm in the wifes clio at the weekend i found i didn't even have a piece of 1mm red anywhere to be found. i ended up using speaker cable to extend a wire. not everyone has thin wire in the house.

but on a side note i have a couple of rolls of red/black kynar from the Xbox chipping days

Just a question?
How many other people or road users bother if you have a flip key or not?
Personally I didn't realize a had a problem with my original key until this thread came up.
I think I stick to the original one, it does what it was meant to do - start my spaceship every time.
This is of course just my humble opinion.

i have and have used the kynar wire and it is the best wire i have worked with and made modding a ps2 easy. if you have a thick wire you have to apply more heat to it which inturn will be bad news for the circuit board where the transponder is now fitted. i will be using this wire when i get the bentley key. i did think about the ebay version, but it will be £24 to have a working flip key, so may as well wait for the bentley type, as i think it will be worth the wait.

How difficult can it be to get a blank key cut? I've been to three locksmiths and not one of them can do it stating they need specialist equipment...

I got my ebay key cut today in basingstoke for £5. So try all the places you can find, there are those that can help.

After getting it cut I tested the new key and it turns the barrel fine. If I hold the proper key against it whilst turning the ignition it starts the car fine too. So I guess tomorrow its time to break out the tools.
