Still waiting on the key I'm afraid. There is no way of avoiding the requirement to move the transponder chip from the main board, so yes you are still looking at having to do the soldering.

I contacted Alex from ebay directly and had him send me a couple over. First impressions was that they are a little rough. So used a very very fine emery cloth to go round the edges and then polished it with polish til it had a shine to it.

Just need to fit the inside in it

Well just use a smaller soldering iron and less heat ....

Apart from that not much at all I would say. Getting the transponder off the board will be the hardest bit. We used to use a solder sucker or solder braid. If you don't have either then you can twist some copper wire - normal flex is good and then flatten it. If you heat the solder throught the 'braid a lot of the solder will be sucked up in to the braid, remove it while it's hot. Do that both ends and you should find it easier to remove the transponder. I would suggest that you get a very small core wire for the extension. Smallest you can get really as any bigger you may struggle to attach it to the small pads of the the PCB or the tabs on the end of the transponder.

I would agree, def a smaller tip and start off with a lower temp setting (if you have a variable temp solder iron that is!). The last thing you want to do is burn the tracks out.

You can buy solder suckers and indeed braid from ebay. Much cheapness!

I think we'll have to start organising regional meets around those of us who are happy to do this so that those who are not can bring their keys along and have them done.

I've just changed from an Xtype Jag, which had a smart and practical flippy key, it was great. Apart from the size and bulk in ones pocket, I am worried about scratching the car, as I regularly unlock the car with the key in my right hand then use the same hand on the door handle.

I would pay mucho ££££s for a flippy key.

you cannot remove the transponder with a solder sucker as the pad is under the transponer. you have to heat one end (12w solder iron) at a time, and gently prize it of with a craft knife as it is just thin enough to get under it. it is also glued on but this goes sticky when you apply the heat at each end. just follow the thread and you will get it sorted.

This is the tool I use, it heats both sides of the chip at the same time.
I strongly advise to use 2 soldering irons and to heat both sides.

stef, that is a specialist soldering iron, and not one that someone will have or access to. i done it with a 12w soldering iron and a craft knife, and was ok, alot better than i thought it would be.

Urm...yes, I don't think I'll be doing this, but might try to find somebody to do the soldering for me and I can do the rest.
Although any ideas what to do if the screw head to open the key seems to be ruined?

Place a tiny drop of WD40 around the screw head and leave it overnight.
With even a really b-ggered up head, you should be able to angle a screwdriver to get a grip in the morning.

Awesome! Why the hell didn't I think of WD-40. I had perfect grip with the screwdriver but the screw was so damn tight the head went before the screw budged an inch.
