Best way to carry a mountain bike?

On my old Golf I could use a rear carrier to transport my filthy mountain bike after a good session in the forest (!) but it looks like this is out of the question with the Civic. I don't fancy messing around putting it in the car as I have a car seat for the little'un which makes it difficult.

So my question is - whats the best way to to do this?

I know there are bike racks that strap to the back (boot lid) of the car.
Here is an example.
Personally I think this is the best solution.

the problem is Honda say you shouldn't use the ones that fit to the rear hatch as it's plastic. Roof bars and a bike clamp is propbaly the way to go if putting it in the car is out

You can fit a swan neck tow bar and buy a rack that fits on the tow bar but this could be pricey in comparison to fitting a roof rack. (If you have a Type R I do not this think that it is possible to fit a tow bar) The problem with the roof rack is that Honda have to cut the strips that run along the side of the roof so that the mounts can be attached and I have heard that the Honda roof rack is hard to fit. Also if you have the glass roof additional supports maybe required, I looked at this a while ago and decided that is was easier and cheaaper to remove child seat and lay down the back seat, using a plastic sheet when bike is muddy.

What about a small Trailer?
Okay, granted you would have to fit a towbar.
Factory tow bar

I put mine on the roof.I bought the genuine roof bars from the dealer and fitted them myself very easily.

Considering trouble of attaching tailgate carrier, and even putting the carrier inside while riding a bike, I dont mind taking childseat off and flip up rear seat cushion. Trunk space is still there for child seat and other staff, and my bike is safe inside upright.

Split seat yeah??

Fold down one half. Take saddle off bike. Invert bike and roll it back. Remove front wheel. Job done.

I regularly carry two bikes this way up and have done it with one and a child. Make sure you support the bike upside down to prevent it toppling over under cornering.

I know this might not help, but I fold the seats down, lay a large blanket over the area and put my bike in. No need to take the wheel off either.
