Boot Space - 485 ltrs?

I'm due to pick up a civic in a couple of weeks. My current car is a megane, boot size 330 ltrs.

The civics is 485. Is it really that much bigger than other brands. It doesn't seem to look that bigger.

Some MPV's have a smaller boot than 485ltrs but the boot actually looks bigger on the MPV. Is the civic deceptively spacious or have they measured it in a different way?

They certainly did not measure very differently to the other manufacturers. What makes the Civic boot so spacious is its depth (due to the mounting of the tank under the front seats) - which means that without using the "magic seats" feature you can fit in pretty high but not necessarily wide items. Take a look at the "hidden" compartment in the boot floor, perhaps you've seen it folded and this makes you think the boot was small, it's one of the biggest in this size class actually, even more so with the "magic seats"

The hidden compartment is where the spare wheel goes. If the spare was fitted as standard then the boot space is similar to other cars.

Check the threads for what we have all got in ours, I got two (four packages) flat packed bookshelves (Argos one, extra deep extra wide, so you can see how big they are) in mine with room to spare. The boot really is big, like a Tardis.

If you compare the trunk of a civic with the trunk of a focus 5dr. you will see the difference !!

or any focus that is!

just an idea on how much space the civic has when the seats are folded down you can get a 42" tv, tv stand, and about 12 bags and still loads and loads of room left to fill!!!

The boot is huge in my Type S, it's really helped by the shape of the hatch, can fit loads of boxes in which is very handy

Even though it may not be exactly 485 litres (useful and actual volumes are normally less than declared by manufacturer) the Civic has a boot space that surprises you regarding the looks from the outside. You will see that it is very useful and flexible, thinking of combination with the magic rear seats. But even as a boot on its own, it is very spacious and easy to load (apart from having to lift the tailgate in winter!! ).

Having owned two focus (focii) I know the civic is bigger. The height is brilliant and I have had a large plastic compost bin in mine with only one seat down to accommodate the length. Definitely more versatile than the focus!

TC has had two Honda Customer Service people in hers, taking them to some place they didn't want to go.
Don't think they were ever seen again.

Pottsy, nothing if not thorough. Do all of those figures include the spare wheel compartment ?.

Nice graph it is very informative to see them all lined up, maybe consider adding Skoda Roomster - might be interesting for people only trying to optimize money/boot space, but still have a small car.

I heard that the new Golf Estate was 560/1550 liters incl the space for the spare wheel. So you should maybe considering subtracting 55 liters on the civic (making it 430) or adding the 55 liters to the golf estate. I really do not know how much you can trust such numbers anyway, they tell little about the "usability" of the space.

Article with the golf numbers:
Volkswagen Golf Variant
