Sounds great!
It's illegal to be patriotic! How come? The Union Flag is legal! ......maybe they'll ban that now! "My father invented the burglar alarm. Someone stole it befoe he got it to the Patent Office!" |

I was fined for showing pride in my regiment - Liverpool Echo.co.uk "Euro (and other flags) on number plates Since 1st September 2001 you have been able to choose to display a Euro flag, for vehicles registered in the UK. The Euro-plate is a number plate that has the symbol of the European Union (a circle of 12 stars on a blue background) with the national identification letters of the member states below it (for example GB). This symbol is located on the far left-hand side of the number plate. Vehicles displaying this Euro symbol on the number plate no longer have to use the traditional oval shaped national identifier (GB) sticker when travelling within the European Union. All vehicles registered in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have, by international convention, the distinguishing sign GB. On 28 December 2001, the Government announced the intention to permit the display of national flags and national identifiers on vehicle number plates. The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 are in the process of being amended. They will provide for the voluntary display of the Union flag, Scottish Saltire, Cross of St George and Red Dragon. Football team crests etc. are not allowed." And Here from the DVLA ( http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/lea...mberplates.pdf ): It is Illegal, as the fascists, erm I mean freely elected government never amended the laws therefore the only flag displayable is that of a foreign power. I'd personally rather have a Welsh Dragon than the stars and i'm not Welsh (at least it shows some sense of national pride, I've got the St Georges cross emblazoned upon my heart, so why shouldn't we be allowed to display our patriotism), can bet they'd allow everything except the flag of St.George though (in case it upsets someone).
As long as the badge isn't offensive or obscuring the plate, whats the problem, also most coppers don't know the law anyway, so you've got no worries. Tom |

"you've got no worries"
unless of course, you come across a copper who does know the law, and decides to take you to task over it... it sucks, but it is the law |

It's only a non endorsable fixed penalty notice, about 30-60 quid if memory serves, if they are that bothered get em' to nick every other Welsh driver I've seen with it on. (If memory serves a Police car near Bridgend almost sideswiped me when he didn't indicate on the motorway, so they're not that hot

Really screw with them and put it across your bonnet instead of your plate then ask whats more noticable! I know mine would look good with "St George Slaying a Dragon" on the bonnet.

I once read somewhere that showing patriotism by waving the Union Jack or St. George's Cross flag was inciting racism!!! Racism - How?
My mate runs a double glazing company in North London and had the St. George's Cross hung outside his factory. He said he had a vist from the local council and was told to take it down because it could potentially offend someone. ...what is this World coming to? So when the 2012 Olympics arrives, what flag am I allowed to wave? The blue European one with those yellow stars? No offence to our European friends but how does the European flag tell someone that I am British and proud to be British??? |

you get to wave the flag with the incomprehensible logo on it...
on the plus side, you might work for the company I do - who are major sponsors And they arrived on carboard 'medals' hung on a corporate colour neck strap - "I'm proud to be supporting the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games" Erm. No Actually. I'd be just as happy if one of our main competitors was splashing their money up the wall. I think I'm fairly convinced that just becuase our logo is going to be splashed across a gazillion world wide TVs, not a whole shed load of people watching are going to suddenly sit up and say "darn - I know the final of the (insert your favourite event here) is about to start, but what I really need to do is pop out and change my bank!" /rant over (sorry! so. flags on number plates then - they're illegal apparently? |

Hasn't this country gone pathetic !! Can't believe that people are complaining about the logo's printed on Reg plates, especially if the police are saying it's illegal. Whats wrong with flying the flag of your country. As long as you have not tampered with the layout of the numbers, there shouldn't be any issue. So it's ok to show the EU flag but not your countries flag....say no more!!! Last edited by ctrdaveg; 4th March 2008 at 08:39. |

As part of the EU, we are (unless we put up a fight) governed by EU directions - hence it's ok to use the EU symbol on the plate. But no one in the EU is likely to pass something to say 'and it's ok to use your flag too' as it is not in their (EU centric) interests to do so. So to get flags to be ok, someone in our government has to pull their finger out and pass a law to say it's ok. And quite obviously, they can't be bothered to do so Then there would be rounds and rounds of discussion as to producing a standard version of each flag (bearing in mind that the flags are landscape and the gap is portrait), and the further hassle of policing it (not that it seems to be policed anyway)... The alternative seems to be "turn a blind eye" To quote (ish, can't remember the exact wording, but it stuck with me) from one of my favourite authors (from either "Number of the beast", or "Friday" by Robert Heinlen): "you can tell that a country is having problems when it starts passing laws which simply can not be enforced" Think we got there a while back |

Surely the Space Ship should have

Not for much longer, any luck they'll dynamite the bl*ody thing. Worst Napoleonic idea ever conceived (short of not going further than Agincourt).
