The car horn

I know that the car horn has been talked about many times, but how often do you use it. I can't remember the last time I used it on any car. The only time people seem to use it is to vent there frustration at other motorists. or is it just me.

Good point, Grasey, I am very much in the same boat. I get encouraged to 'beep him !' by the Mrs. but I don't really want to start a road war ! The only time I am inclined to do it is when children are clearly not looking where they are going, just as an 'I am HERE' message !

You are forgetting that they are essential to taxi drivers who pull up at 06.00 and blast it outside a house to let them know their taxi has arrived!

I use mine virtually everyday, when traversing dodgy road chicanes and windy roads as the IAM teaches, it allows other to know something is there, it has saved my car a few times.

If you've got a horn use it, don't be afraid of a little audiological dynamism!!

Exactly, the roads around here, people treat them like brandshatch! especially round blind bends! The horn whilst girly, at least makes you think "what was that!".

I once tooted a car that had stopped just off a roundabout. I couldn't pass and two cars behind me where held up blocking the roundabout.

I tooted and received gestures from inside the car who moved and allowed me, and the others, to pass.

It turned out they were going to the same retaurant as us and the female passenger (about 5' tall and around 70 years of age) came over to me and shouted saying things like '..who do I think I was..' etc.

I tried to point out the reason and was sorry if the hooter was loud, but big cars (I had a Lexus LS430) tended to have loud hooters with no volume control. She continued her tirade and I calmly turned towards her husband and said I'm sorry but you had stopped in a dangerous place.

His reply was to his wife 'Come away dear; he's not worth it' ; this prompted me to say ' Look mate, it's not my fault you're married to a little woman with a big mouth'.

I thought 'road rage' was confined to younger people.

Felt sorry for the chap though, as he has had to endure years of her, so I just walked away. In any case, it was probably her that told him to stop where he had!

Don't think I've tooted since!

People are just too much work, especially if you drive properly and they don't.

Older people seem to treat me like a thug (phrases like "I fought in the war for you!", or another classic, "I've been driving XX years", well back when you got your licence they were a penny from the post office, I know my highway code, can you remember yours, it probably had horse and cart manouevres in!), because I wear a hoody (my uni one) and I look kinda young (got Id'd for a PG a while ago, how does that work!!!!). My response is usually to speak very softly, (they don't like that as it seems patronising), then explain to them why they should **** off and get some driving lessons, glasses or a course of euthenasia, but then again I am a "hoody wearing thug", hmmmmmm. It is older drivers who are seemingly the worst, I got some "old dear" yesterday going to Tesco's, she was doing 23mph (by my speedo, so about 20-21mph in reality), going along NSL roads, but it is winding so is dangerous to pass, I don't want to go 100mph, but at least 45 would have been nice. She gave me a filthy look, because I'd been hanging off her bumper when we got to Tesco's (shouldn't go so slowly then).

That is what a hooter is for!, so she can stick it if her husband can't drive.
