Scraping noise

I've just noticed a strange fairly high pitched scraping kind of sound. I was just driving in a straight line and it started, i pulled over expecting to find something hanging off the bottom of the car but there was nothing. It then just occurs randomly sometimes for a split second, other times for 5 or 6 seconds before dissapearing. It sounds like it comes from the front drivers side of the car somewhere on the outside. I have an 07 2.2diesel. Anyone got any clues what it could be?

Could it be something stuck in the brakes?

Yeah I had the same thing, scared the life out of me and I pulled to a stop quickly (fortunately I was on a quiet road). And as FWH says it was a small stone stuck in the brake. I tried limping (loudly) to my work car park which was thirty yards further on and as I took the double left-right turn to get into the car park the stone must have dislodged itself.

could be, I'll have a good look in the morning. I've driven a good 20 miles since 1st hearing it though, so i would have thought it would have dislodged itself if that was the case.
