Am I mad or is this the Civic Effect

I have had my Civ for just over 2 weeks and I am purposely driving a longer way home from work. One eye is on the Mpg but then I am driving more miles. Madness

Also, I am getting really anal over where I park the car in car parks. i.e. no where near another car. This is driving the wife mad!!

My wife gave up with me years ago regarding the car park thing.

No this is normal civic driver behaviour - really! Your wife will just have to get used to it!

I do exactly the same thing!

The time to start taking the pills, is when you start parking it in an empty 5 acre field and block the gate with a tractor, as I do.

No way.. No matter how far away I park mine from others, some vandal is attracted thus parks right beside and bang-opens its door into mine.. I've got 4 tiny dents by now

My last car (a Megane) was the 1st brand new car I have owned. I park it in the furthest corners of the car parks and 3 years on its ding free.

I plan to keep up the same regime for the Civic I bought 2 weeks ago.

It always amazes me the 'herding' instinct of humans. You park your car out of the way in a car park and someone has got to park nearby, even though they have acres of other spaces to pick. Weird.

Once I was sitting in my car on a park, waiting for someone. Suddenly some little kid came to get into the car parked next to me. He hit my side mirror with his head (was funny) and than opened the door and hit my car - he was hitting several times, because couldn't open the door wide enough to get into (wasn't funny). I saw that everything in my side mirror, got upset and made a little scene with kid's father. Fortunately the scratches were small enough to get rid of them using a scratch remover.
I think in future I'm gonna have a seperate car to drive my kids...

And of course I behave the same. I can walk longer from my parking place to be sure that my car is safe...

Same thing happens to me. I park in some distant, lonely, deserted part of a car park and when i come back my car is surrounded by other cars even though the car park is still half empty

Funny you should say that, I'm doing the same!!! However, will be in a tight car park tomorrow as taking the car on a ferry to France and it's always a concern with loads of people walking between tightly parked cars plus the Chelsea Tractor brigade!

Cheers,

Bob...

Exactly! That is really downright obnoxious. At the supermarket one (I call them chickens ) tracked me the entire parking passing about 10-15 double empty parking spaces and still managed to park right next to me.

Yea I don't get this either - it is soooo annoying! I park my car in a place that is nowhere near anyone else but till people park next to you and you think to yourself " why?"

So far I have been lucky!

I find that when you have a car that you love you seem to do this. I was the same with my Mini, sold it after 6 years and it still looked brand new. Tried not to get it bumped, scraped or dinked by pakring as far as I could in car parks but you always find that someone wants to park right next to you. I even found this at 4am in ASDA!!!! Wtf? The car park was dead!

I've found myself going to a car park and driving back out because I couldn't find a space, granted it was ASDA, it was windy and I had just seen trollys fly into a new 5 series and a RS4! I didn't want my car to be next

No, i have done this too, much to he annoyance of my wife, and that was in my fabia! In my civic I am even worse.

Last night I went to the airport to pick up my wife who was returning from holiday. The car park in the airport is very tight and there weren't many spaces - unfortunately I couldn't leave! I found the most expensive car in the car park that I could park next to and parked there - in the vain hope nothing would happen to it! I know it doesn't always work that way but I tried - nothing happened!

Thats sound advice, on some advanced driver training I did a few years ago, the instructor was going over car parks. His general rule of thumb was to park next to the best car you can, and ideally those that have reversed in to their space. There is then a much higher chance that a) they want to look after there car as much as yours and b) when reversed its less likely that you'll scraped as they leave...

I now extend this to make sure I dont park next to cars with baby seats or other very obvious signs of children (see child dinging above!)....

Having said that, I've still got one very small ding on my offside rear passenger door

Never knew that! although I tend to reverse in as it is easier to park, for me.

When I see a car with a child seat I make sure I am not next to it.

You learn something new every day!

I was down at my local the other day...

Saw someone with an old beater bang their door quite heavily into the car beside them (Nice little BMW 130i).

They stopped, had a look at the other car, got in their car and drove away.

I went over, had a look for myself, noted the nice dent they had left (I knew it was them as they had left some of their paint behind).

Took out a piece of paper and wrote a quick note with their rego number and my mobile number.

Guy who owned the 130 gave me a call that night. He was very appreciative and I am expecting a call from his insurance company.

Sometimes people really suck...

Well done, and I really mean that. I wish more people were like you, honest and with morals. A rare breed nowadays.
