If you want to really feel the road you need something like a Elise, VX220 or Caterham. My MX5 is a good compromise between a hardcore sportscar and a car you can drive everyday.
IMO (of course!) the MX5 is NOT a sports car. Just cos a car says "sport" after it, doesnt make it so! But each to their own i suppose...

Ill second that - insurance group 13, 0 - 60 - 8 secs - quick but not sports - feels faster when the tops down though

I don't even class the M3 on the drive as a Sports car....probably due to the fact its a 4 seater convertible

Yes the sound is amazing! Me and my Dad both love to hear the roar from the engine my mother thinks we are sad! Mmmmmm I may actually take this to work on Saturday and leave the CTR at home (weather permitting as I want the roof down!) Since its been back on the road my Dad has put the keys in my hand several times and i've said not today lol!!! I must be mad!!!

You said no !
Ever since i drove one a couple of weeks ago i just cant get over it , it was a white one, not convertible mind you, imported, and OMG i didn't sleep all night.
I would even trade in my gf any day for it
I might tell her to start making M3 sounds or shes outta here !

Lol!!! I'll teach her how it sounds if you want ha ha! But yes I said no, but basically it there to use whenever I want......jings I was the first person to drive it when my Dad bought it....drove all the way from Halliwell Jones in Chester on a Saturday to Edinburgh......oh and its just as bumpy/jumpy on these uneven surfaces just like the CTR! Probably yet another reason why I fail to find the ride of the Civic Hard as I had to use it as my every day car when I sold the Mini. Two months of Slumming it lol!!!

What!!!??
MX5 NOT a Sports Car??
Its based on the Lotus and has good perormance and is very 'chuckable'.
This is what a Sports Car is meant to be.
Just because its got a 1.8 engine doesnt mean its NOT classed as a Sports Car!!
My MG Midget had a 1275 cc engine...BUT..
It was, in every way, a Sports Car
I add this definition to help you decide:
Quote:
A sports car is a term used to describe a class automobile. The exact definition varies, but most vehicles referred to as sports cars are rear-wheel drive, have two seats, two doors, and are designed for more precise handling, acceleration, and aesthetics. A sports car's dominant considerations can be superior road handling, braking, maneuverability, low weight, and high power, rather than passenger space, comfort, and fuel economy.
Sports cars can be either luxurious] or spartan, but driving mechanical performance is the key attraction.
Drivers regard brand name and the subsequent racing reputation and history (for example, Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Porsche, Lotus) as important indications of sporting quality, but brands such as Lamborghini, which do not race or build racing cars, are also highly regarded.
A car may be a sporting automobile without being a sports car. Performance modifications of regular, production cars, such as sport compacts, sports sedans, muscle cars, hot hatches and the like, generally are not considered sports cars, yet share traits common to sports cars. They are sometimes called "sports cars" for marketing purposes for increased advertising and promotional purposes.
Performance cars of all configurations are grouped as Sports and Grand tourer cars (GT), or, occasionally, as performance cars.
A sports car does not require a large, powerful engine, though many do have them. Some classic British sports cars lacked powerful engines, but were known for exceptional handling due to light weight, a well-engineered, balanced chassis, and modern suspension. On tight, twisting roads, such an automobile performs more effectively than a heavier, more powerful luxury car with less maneuverability

Ha ha at the tip comment, nice one

It did look a bit strange going to the Honda Garage to eventually take the CTR out and turning up in a M3......Think some folk thought that I was trading it in for it.....hell no! Did look at a nice wee convertible for myself (although that wasn't practical at the time) but didn't see the point of having another 'soft top' when there was already one on the drive.....think my Dad just wanted me to get the SLK or S2000 so he could play with it

Do you mean "inspired by" or actaully "based on"?

If "based on" - which Lotus are you saying the MX5 is based on?

Got it, different use of language..

For example, I would say the Octavia is "based on" the Golf.

But I see what you mean.

I think MX5's are hairdressers cars!! You know you get an NC in "hair styling" as standard when you pick the car up hehe

For a weekend car i would go for an elise or a TVR. Now theres a real sports car make- TVR. Def only a weekend car tho as they are not reliable enough to drive for any longer!!!!!!!

SLK - GAY!!!!!! I didn't even consider one!!!! My Dad didn't realise that I had the CTR on order and kept trying to get me to go look at Audi S3 (hmmmmmm not sure), SLK (GAY), Golf GTi (Was good in the day but it looks fat and Ugly now...an athlete gone to seed), Golf R32 (again the first one/last model looked ace my Dad almost bought one as it has the same small steering wheel his XR3i had but new one fat and ugly) and enquire about the 1 series coupe and convertible (nice looking in pics but no thanks).

You can see a pattern forming all German cars! My dad can't seem to go by a BMW even after all the issues he has had. He loves that CTR but wold rather I bought German, he even said how about the ST.....how about no! I wanted to look at the Skoda Fabia VRs but he told me I would't like it inside.

Back on topic again, I know that they say that the MX-5 is the worlds best selling roadster but its A) Been around for donkeys! and B) rather cheap in comparison to other 2 seater sports cars that were out their before the market was flooded with these silly 206/207cc's etc but these new convetibles that everyone seems to have jumped on the band wagon with are not sports cars either as they have 4 seats......Now i'd rather have an MX-5 than a 207cc!!!!
