What happens when.......

.......you try to squeeze a civic and an astra estate down a narrow country lane together....?

To say that i am unhappy would be rather polite at this point.

My poor civic.

I'm a very regular country road driver, so i know to always keep to my side of the road, you never can be sure what's round the next corner. It appears this time it was an astra estate coming down the middle of the road. I immediately jumped on the brakes and veered over as far as i could (as well as a long toot on the horn for effect) but the astra failed to really get over much and then there was a big thud.

My car has now been towed away to civic heaven.

Worst bit is that there are no lines painted on the road, and no visible tyre marks anywhere, so unless the other driver admits liability which i heavily doubt, looks like a 50-50 insurance claim.

I really liked my car......

What can I say

You must be feeling awful. I really, really feel for you. Makes me quite ill to look at the pictures, I just feel so bad for you.

I hope there is some kind of magic in Civic Heaven that can sort it all out and wish you the very best of luck in getting it all sorted and back to its former glory.

They say time is a great healer, time, some replacement parts and someone's skill should hopefully do the trick. There is the insurance, whichever way it works, to look after it.

I am hoping you are ok apart from the inevitable shock and mental anguish.

The car CAN be mended or replaced, people don't work that way

The very best of luck getting it and yourself back to normal.

Thanks very much.

I was absolutely fine after the accident, there was no front end impact so we kinda glanced off each other. Other driver was also fine apart from she had her window open, so in the collision, her wing mirror came off and whacked her in the face! Very superficial though, no blood.

I know that it's just metal and can be fixed, but it's damn annoying. I really like my car and now i'm gonna have to sort out something else to drive which i don't have time or money to do! Plus, because it's going to be impossible to prove who's fault it was, i'm more than likely also going to have to pay the insurance excess AND lose my ncb. That wouldn't bother me so much apart from in my own mind it was 100% the other driver's fault. It just annoys me that people don't pay enough attention on the road. This could have been easily avoided if a) the other driver was driving on the left hand side, not the middle of the road and b) if the other driver had been paying attention and reacted when she saw my car and moved back over to the left hand side. In this case it's not going to be the liable party who pays for it, it'll be both.

Forgot to add.....
The astra somehow got away with a broken wing mirror and minor dents on the front wing and driver's door. They were also able to drive home while i waited a good hour and a half for a tow truck.... (

I did see, a while back, a forward looking camera that you fit to your mirror. I know that in this case the horse has bolted, so to speak, but it records up to half an hour onto solid state memory then continuously loops. At any time you can stop it and transfer the last half hour to computer for evidence in such cases. That is the only way I can see that you could have had more protection on the insurance side.

Like any of these things you don't think you'll ever need it, but I must admit I do have the no claims protection which does add a little more security.

I am most relieved that you are ok physically and best of luck with the insurance, I don't suppose the other driver made any admissions that might be useful ?

Jeez, It looks like someone has taken a giant can opener and tried to open the side of your car!!

Glad to hear you are ok and the car will be repaired or replaced.

I had mine reversed into in a car park by a lady who I know, she was in a Chelsea tractor and knocked my bumper, lights etc over to the right by about 1 cm with scratches down the bumper, no where near as bad as yours, but I still felt like I wanted to belt her!! Except she did that girlie thing and started crying........Oh no not your new car........Oh yes my effing new car!!
I had it all done on her insurance and looks as good as new now!

It may still be worth the trouble drawing all the little maps and things and trying to prove you were not at fault. You never know, if the other driver hasn't got their story straight then the investigators may see that there is a reason to question their version. I'd say go for it, you've nothing to lose.

Is your cars photo's taken in the spot where the accident happened???? If so using Carfolio.com (for sizes of cars etc. etc.), you may be able to work out a detailed scale map easily and prove that to have been hit, at that point she must have been in the wrong.

Sorry to hear of your incident mate, I know how you feel I had a near miss this morning, bloomin lorry (sorry to say Polish of course, at least I think that's what PL means???), didn't even slow down, it was a 60 limit so he was doing 60!, it's a winding country road near Sandwich, barely big enough to get a car past another car in one go!! People drive like madmen round country lanes, just because it say NSL it doesn't mean you have to drive at 60!, also no lines is a b*gger, makes everything so hard, but generally the should be an acceptable line that can be drawn. Also I admit I do drive in the middle, but I drive at about 35-40 and use the extra distance to check corners thoroughly, not to drive like a race car driver.

Try to prove it was her fault (little justice that a couple of teeth may have been worked loose by the wing mirror??) Did she stop?????? If not try the police.

Hopefully it'll all get fixed quickly and fully, have them check your frame on a jig, JIC, it's not always obvious when driving.

ATB,
Tom

Wink

Things like this happen to people like us everyday. I had a similar experience, not my fault at all, neighbours shed roof blew off and damaged my Civic, I lost my NCB and had to pay £150.00 excess. He didn't offer any help and not even an apology this just made me really cynical about people. It's hard not to be. It just shows that even if people know that they're at fault all they care about is them.

Don't worry about your car if it goes to a Honda workshop it'll come back pristine and as good as new, mine did.

It clearly wasn't your fault and that will make you feel worse I suppose but only time will make you feel better.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Well i did speak to the other driver when it happened, they showed no signs of admitting any guilt. Short conversation went as follows:

me: Are you ok?
Other: Yeah, i don't really know what happened
me: Well you were in the middle of the road
other: Really?
me: Yeah, i did beep my horn and try and get over....

Then the police turned up. I went back to my car to get a couple of things and the police were just asking me questions, when i walked back over to her car, she had already gone!

As for tyre marks etc, nothing at all. The car is at least 100 yrds from where we actually collided.

Oh well, just trying to sort it all out now.

Morale of the story is, DRIVE CAREFULLY!

Hopefully you'll be alright but then i was driving nice and sensibly....

Have you got pictures of the damage?

If her car has the dents on the front end and your dents are down the side-rear its possible to prove she was at fault.

Speak to your local bobby and see what they make of it.

Ouch...

Glad you are OK. How fast was he going? That's no nudge is it!

It's almost riped the door off.

Hope the civ is back to rude health at the earliest...
