Come on everybody. Play nice. I'm sure that Iluv's Mum will do far more damage to Iluv than we could if he even scratches the car, let alone crash it.
We were all 17 once and had to learn and gain experience at some point. Iluv - It's not about what you think you know when driving a car, after all any muppet can get a driving licence these days. It's about how you handle the unexpected problems and having the ability to say no to your peer group, even if it makes you look a woose (in their eyes). But it will mean you wouldn't be a Fatal statistic (like your friends) and you'll have a beautiful Civic for a long time. Or until your 21st birthday when its CTR time. If you trash the Sport do you think you'll get a CTR??? |

If, (and it's a big if) Iluv ISN'T a troll, I suspect that with a brand new Civic, he'll be held in more esteem than the 106/saxo/corsa/clio drivers who spend loads tarting up crap cars and end up making them look cheaper than they are already.
But like I say, it's a big if. In any case, it will only be a couple of months before he gets the requisite 6 points to ban him so we'll all be safe soon enough. * *an ironic post because it's all hypothetical. |

But I would feel a lot safer (especially on motorways and dual carriageways) if I had a 17yr old in a naff looking car with an under powered engine than in a car with the performance of the 1.8 civic. You can get some nice looking cars with smaller engines surely even a 1.4 civic would have been the more sensible option for a first car? I dread to think what the insurance must be!! |

Well - here's my 'tuppence worth' (tuppence is 2 old pennies - i.e 2/240th. of £1.00 - d*mn - there can't be all that many people here who know that !) ...
Anyway, nothing wrong with stretching (i.e. improving) one's driving experience \ capability \ skills - BUT - I have to agree that a 1.8 i-VTEC Civic could be a little too much for a new driver ... Having said that, much - if not all - depends on 'cultural' factors, i.e. family and friends and peer group influence, as well as individual 'predeliction' ... Personally, I started on a (even then) old Vauxhall Viva, supplied by my Father ... Obviously, I then knew that I was "race standard", so my next car - this bought by me - was a Triumph Spitfire (by the way - it was a 'babe-magnet'), which I proceeded to thrash for some 6 months, until I rolled it and wrote it off ! ... No damage to me, but the damage to my car insurance record and subsequent premiums was absolutely gob-smacking (annual 3rd. party cost was the same as the price for my - much more mundane - next car) ... By the way, I was in the UK over Easter with my Norwegian 1.8 EX Civic and discovered (driving from Newcastle to Glasgow) that my motorway driving had seriously deteriorated, due to driving for years at (low) Norwegian limits ... However, on the way back, all was well ! - reflexes \ anticipation \ physical control all came back without any stress - and I can report that there was almost nothing that could out-accelerate the Civic from an A1 roundabout - oh happy days ... So, to conclude, let our 17 year old correspondent take care and enjoy ! ... |

right chaps, this post is going nowhere! Ok he is 17, ok he is lucky to get this car and prob does not realise how lucky he is, ok he may seem a bit cocky and jack the lad! But . . . . . i'm 21 and by the end of this year i will have 5 years no claims (i hope / im touching wood)
Just because some young drivers do drive like idiots does not mean we all do. Now surely lets end these pointless ramblings and and abusing iluv and stereotyping us young drivers |

Doesn't matter what you put someone in, if they are in the mind set that they are Lewis Hamilton then they will always put pedal to the metal in a wee 106/saxo etc. Jings there is a lad on this site who has a 1.4 and me and another forum user did wonder who he was trying to impress with his speeding around a car park, because it wasn't us thats for sure.
Driving on country roads about here isn't safe and if thats what he thinks then he'll soon find out the hard way. Anyways, they've also put up a post asking how much they would get for this car so take from that what you will. |

Ummm ... we didn't all abuse young drivers ...
In fact, some of us have confessed to once being just that ... So - yes - very lucky indeed to have a Civic at 17 ! ... Live long and prosper (and don't bug*er-up your insurance) ... |

We did Woody and I know what your saying, Jings I had a Cooper S when I was 17 and no accidents (touch wood) but i'm not sure if your aware (probably not) but every weekend without fail some young lads who have recently passed their test and are inexperianced lose their life on the roads up here! And its the roads that I drive on that he will be driving on!
The other week one lad managed to wipe himself out in his Ford Puma along with a 8 year old boy, his aunty and his grandmother left fighting for her life in Hospital. Wet road, going too fast on the other side of the road round a bend, inexperianced and he has ruined God knows how many peoples lives for what? I know that Essex has its fair share of boy racers but it doesn't seem to matter what they do up here, they just don't listen! Last edited by angie4m; 2nd April 2008 at 21:07. |

Boy Racers
Arrggghhh - 'Jim Lad' ...
I once was one - or thought I was ... But, this was then in the north of Scotland - not great roads - but not then exactly over-endowed with excess vehicles either .. However, it was a great place to aquire driving skills, since a 30 mile trip could then encounter almost every type of situation imaginable ... Anyway, I enjoyed it, BUT, it didn't prepare me for UK motorways at all ! ... That's a quite different set of skills and all new drivers need \ should appreciate that (including dual carriageways such as on the A1) ... |

ANGIE4M ...
Agreed ... the Edinburgh bypass & the A1 (near Edinburgh) are often 'scary' ... That is, no place whatsoever for learner drivers (of any age or nationality) ... But, the A1 further south (despite the ubiquitous roadside warnings) isn't so bad ... Plus, with Norwegian plates, I was able to ignore all the speed cameras ! ... Yes - I drove responsibly - in accordance to the road \ weather \ traffic status ... But, it wasn't half fun ... |
