Just because some young drivers do drive like idiots does not mean we all do. Now surely lets end these pointless ramblings and and abusing iluv and stereotyping us young drivers
Yep I agree! I am also 21 - and have never had an accident! So it's not ALL young drivers!

Question Staggered Licenses Anyone

Reading this thread, and not commenting on the original poster, but the subject matter.............

This is why we have ended up in the motorcycling world with enforced stages of progression. "When I were a boy" you started on a Moped, or if you were "lucky" a Fizzie. You then progressed to a 250, then a 500 before reaching the dizzy heights of a 750. This "restraint" was mainly a financially enforced one. As bikes became more powerful, and relatively cheaper, the carnage increased and getting a motorcycle licence has become progressively more difficult/more time consuming/more hassle.

We now have a "fastrack" route called Direct Access Scheme (DAS). Take a one week course and then ride what you like. You can cram the theory but there is NO substitute for practical experience. I know the "chicken & egg" spring to mind, but if you saw some of the riders I do who have passed the ministry test......you'd be very afraid.

So what has this got to do with a 17 year old in a 1.8 VTEC Honda? Surely the time has come for similar "restrictions" to be put in place so that Johnny CAN'T drive daddy's Porche (or more likely "hot" company car) without some lmeasured evel of experience.

I realise there will always be some who get around the rules or just ignore them completely, but some level of retraint NEEDS to be bought about by some means.

Finally everybody can benifit from further learning after the ministry test. Official instructors run "Pass Plus" while many organisations (IAM, ROSPA etc) run local groups on a volunatry basis. Join one you never know you may enjoy it, Most of the bike groups have thrown out the "pipe and slippers" years ago, and the car groups are gradually improving

An interesting topic. I missed it as it got tucked away

I had to speed read (ignoring the chaff), but some good points made from both sides of the fence.

My stance would be:-

1. Graded licenses for ALL (bikes/cars/etc).
2. Repeat testing for ALL (5 yearly).
3. Compulsary medical from 60 by an independant practioner NOT your GP.
4. Oh, and lots MORE traffic police who can spot dangerours driving/riding that no camera ever can.

Yes, it would cost a fortune, but how much does each fatal accident cost financially, with police, ambulance, docters etc. and the now obligatry road closure? That in no way is forgetting the tragedy to those involved or close to those involved.

Shame he can't actually drive yet as Lothian and Borders Police are holding driving experiance days for 17-25 year olds. Get to do training with the old traffic cops, skidpans etc. They are also offereing someone the chance of a trackday at Knockhill.

There was a problem over xmas with under 25's and over 50's with the old Drink driving, not wearing seatbelts and using mobile phones while driving, oh and speeding and they are targeting young drivers at the moment. Actually quite responsible of them

this thread more reads like an attack on young drivers!!!
I think its a shame!! The guy is just happy with his own car and yes he wants to give it a good burst of revs, SO WHAT???? We didn't bought our 1.8 vtec's to push them forward... and it has 138 BHP for a reason.
There are youngsters who drive crazy but the older people are as dangerous to me. Its more an attitude problem then an age problem.
Statistics show us that young drivers have higher risks of crashing due to a lack in experience. But IF they crash, its not always because they were driving like a nutter. Accidents CAN happen and thats why we all have to get insurances for our cars (i found out one month ago ) So why dont we let him get his license first and if something should happen, then lets hope no one else is involved.
Driving a car is a huge responsability and that is something that each 'learning' driver knows.... or should know at least
