By sticking to speed limits mostly, using the vtec now and again. Drove from Essex to Edinburgh today started off in rush hour traffic drove some country roads, some motorways, some A dual and single carriageways, some B roads gave it a good blast every so often, Did 274.9 miles with 188 miles left in the tank and had less than 100 miles left to go, topped it up and it only took 24.07 litres, I thought it was more but i've just checked the recipt and i still have almost 400 miles left in the tank. Yeeeha! I am going to have the most fuel efficent CTR

I went out to the mid east for a few months at start of year with diesel at about 96ppl and came back to find out diesel was now 116ppl and my car tax would be going up to £310 (for my old audi). As a result the cost of food had shot up due to these rises. The government can quite easily adjust the duty or VAT imposed and they'd still be getting the same tax revenue as when diesel was 96ppl. As for the road tax jumping 50% I wouldn't mind so much if they actually used the revenue to repair the effing roads but its almost not worth trying to avoid the potholes as there's to many.

As for using public transport to get to work the council's don't seem to do routes to military camps. Especially when you have to travel 40+ miles and do random shifts and finish times so I'm tied to my car.

As I do get fuel allowance I shouldn't be that bothered but it just infuriates me that the government would rather rake in the extra tax than help cut the ever increasing tax burden on the people of this country.

Ahhh feels better after that rant.

They never really went up in the East really, well Edinburgh - Seems to be the same as everywhere else in the UK.

Well if I do take the CTR instead of the M tonight then it will be loving me cause i'm going to blast it and I don't care if I get 7 mpg or 21 like I used too, i'm just going to cane it!

Not had the M out this week and the weather is just great for getting the top down - that really needs a blast too

Plus the CTR is going to get a real treat soon

Getting back to the original thread of petrol prices.

My maths is pretty reasonable but I can't work this one out - If oil is sold in dollars and the dollar is weak why are fuel prices going up instead of down?

Maybe the financial industry has more to answer for than the present 'credit crunch'.

I guess because it takes more dollars to buy something this year than last. If it was stronger against the £ or Euro or what ever currency then you would get more for your 1/100 etc dollars if you used that to trade.

£1.24 for diesel at my local now. Not much less in sainsburys Really is a killer for us field based guys who only get the basic 12p per mile to cover business use.

And even though i have done 5000+ miles, I am still only getting 38mpg from my 2.2. Thats sticking to speed limits pretty much and using cruise control as much as poss.

When will it end. It can't keep increasing surely!!!!

Do you have to have a roof rack on or something? I get 35+ out of mine with 3 bikes on the roof.

Perhaps check your tyre pressures, 38 appears low for a 2.2

Lots of oil is sold in Euros or Yen, and the percentage that is not sold in dollars increases when the dollar is weak. IIRC Iran was in the news a while back for having more oil sales in Euros than in dollars. The media prefer to report in dollars per barrel - it is the traditional benchmark and it also produces a better headline figure. In fact, you can get the situation where the oil price in Euro or Yen is static, but the dollars per barrel will go up because of the falling dollar.

...... that's £1.24 per imperial gallon I guess?
If I calculate with 4.55 liter per gallon and 1.26 €/£ that would make
1.56 €/gallon and 0.34 €/liter, correct?

The point??

We pay 1.30€/liter in Holland at the moment. Stop complaining!

Thanks for the explanation. Sounds better than the bank manager who said it was down to 'hedge funds' and market speculation.

Mind you there's always a good excuse for rising prices. Can't help feeling that, as with so many other things, some are getting rich out of this, and not just the government and the oil industry!

We're now at 119p/l for diesel and still rising. Managed to save some money by having a much lighter right foot, and sending my son to school on the school bus as we are just over 3 miles away. Benefit is fewer town miles and 3 mile more from every gallon of fuel.

The BP garage at the end of my road is charging 112.9 for normal petrol and a whopping 123.9 for normal diesel!

that's 50p per gallon extra...

BP seem to be charging more than everyone else full stop!

Its 107.9p for Petrol and 116.9p for diesel in Shell and supermarkets in Edinburgh (apart from Tesco's) but BP are always about 5p more.....it costs me 112.9p for V-Power! It costs 118.9p for BP Ultimate which is only 97 ron compared to the 99 ron in Shells V-Power. Madness!!!!
