Petrol prices and floodgates

Has anyone else noticed that the petrol stations all hovered around 99.9 for ages, going up and down between 97.9 and 99.9, but now they've broken the pound mark it just seems to be going up and up. It seems to be 107.9 now! Ridiculous.

With the threatened strike in Grangemouth looming there are garages in Scotland charging upwards of £1.20 a litre for unleaded. Robbing ba!£&rds.

yes now that they have broken the psychological £1.00 barrier there is no stopping them

there is talk of petty being £1.50 in the summer which would be catastrophic for some people

i read the other day that workers from an oil refinery in scotland are striking over pay soon, which would mean the refinery would have to close causing a slight fuel shortage in certain areas.

my question is how many refineries are there in the UK?
what if ALL the workers from ALL the refineries striked.
fuel would run dry pretty quickly
everyone would have to use public transport
country would come to a standstill
government would HAVE to reduce fuel prices?

Government would turn round and say "we told you to start using public transport..."

though quite what fuel the buses would be running on is a different matter

yea but if the whole country had to use public transport would there be enough capacity, would the system not fail ?
or people would not bother going to work and the economy would be hit big time?

oh yes i forgot about that , so noone would be able to go work or uni or anywhere
it would be GREAT

It would be great not having to go to work if everything shut down - BUT i would get seriously depressed if having all that extra time on my hands i couldn't go and drive my car

Also a fuel shortage would affect food deliveries and i might not be able to get my Kinder Bueno fix

But seriously the worst thing about fuel shortage rumours is that people stockpile and a problem is caused where one need not exist

i got a plan
when my plan as detailed above goes into full force i will let you know beforehand, this way you can stockpile kinder buenos and crispy rolls instead of fuel

on a serious note, i can only see something like that ever changing fuel prices, otherwise we might as well accept that in a few years time we will be paying SILLY amounts.

Report on Teletext this morning that some Scottish garages are now profiteering and charging up to £1.50 a litre with the threatened fuel shortage up there.

Fuel prices will only go up as we have passed "PEAK OIL" in the 1980"s . JP MORGAN has said that there will be $200 a barrel in 18 months. Google peak oil to see what iam talking about.

Another matter would be, how do public transport workers get to work to start the service up in the morning.
There isn't any other way of getting to work for 04.00 other than driving for most of us. If we can't get to work, then the trains and buses don't go

Peak oil

Even the most pessimistic analyses that I have seen claim we have only just passed peak oil in 2005/2007. It definitely didn't happen in the 1980s! The optimists talk about not reaching a peak until 2030 or later (the very optimistic reckon we'll plateau and demand will drop before supply does).

Nonetheless, prices are likely to generally go up because (1) inflation happens and (2) oil companies/oil states have a tight control on supply and rising prices are in their interest.

It has just been on our news at the radio station where I work about the petrol prices.

They were saying that prices have gone up by 5p a litre in 3 days in some parts of the country and warned people not to start panic buying!

for those of us who have been driving since petrol was only a little over a pound per gallon, todays prices are already silly

On a seperate, but related note - this is one of the reasons we now buy in litres rather than gallons.

Back in the day, when looking for cheap petrol, you probably wouldn't bother to avoid the Shell garage that was 2p per gallon more expensive than the Texaco one down the road.
These days, a 2p per litre difference doesn't look too bad either, but is actually 10p per gallon - more than enough to make you drive past - if you work it out as gallons.

Not everyone does. But we're right up there due to the 70% duty and VAT our illustrious government takes on every sale.
