Exploding Rear windows.

hello, new to this so bear with me. Thanks

I have a 2.2CTDI EX whose rear screen has just exploded outwards whilst parked in my office car park!!

Any others, is this a oneoff or is there a problem that we should all know about?

NHDan it says he was parked - meaning he might not of been nowhere near the car
that is worrying

No the car had been parked for about an hour, interestingly, on earlier threads, people were discussing the rear heater element.
I have been out to tape up the window(raining now!!) and the rest of the screen that is left is warm, no ignition key in at all.

Dealer says it cannot happen and has recommended the AA come and check.!?!

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.
To my knowledge there has never been such an incident before.
Let's just hope it is a one-off.

Rear wind screen

Hiya,
Sorry to hear your news I've only come across this once before(not on a Honda I hasten to add) and was suspected to be a poorly fitted screen and extreme tempreture changes from a frozen screen when the heated screen is turned on.

I doubt you had this kind of temp in Northants recently and the dealers would have a very difficult if not impossible time proving to Honda a vehicle defect, even if it was and not external forces at play!

Again, sorry to hear your news, not sure on the cost of a replacement but you may be able to claim it through your insurance if it's very expensive!

Is it a decent area your in? Could it be some little b*gger with an airgun???? Does the glass have 'fracture marks' (marks on the broken edges??), and is the from what was left, any visible 'pattern' (like below, this typical of a stone or airgun pellet, a radiating pattern, and it should appear quite obvious if part of the glass is in place).

Anyone know if the rear window is tempered/laminate etc. etc.

Good point

Even though the glass exploded outwards, this could be because the glass is convex.

Some little git with an air rifle could be a possible cause, but why just one car out of many in a car park?

If there is no apparent obvious cause, it may be possible for excessive twisting in the body of the car to crack windscreens.

Probably just 'plinking' (shooting for fun, with no real 'aim', no pun intended ). Did people go and look when the window went if so, perhaps they got frightened off???? I mean shooting at empty cars is one thing, to shoot at people, quite another. If anyone has any spare convex glass, maybe we could conduct a test???

Very interesting, did'nt know it can happen. I was thinking, like the others, that someone broke it just for fun....

I'm sorry for you Gambo65. I hope you can convice your dealer or honda to take it as a waranty claim.

After reading that page, I am rather sceptical of some theories put forward, especially those of sonic resonance, it would have to be maintained for quite a while at the precise frequency where all the molecules vibrate together, possible but IMHO unlikely (otherwise other glass would have surely gone).

If it is certain that it exploded outwards, it can only be faulty material I guess - otherwise I would look for a bullet in the car (no joke - one of my colleagues once shot his own car with a ricochet at a shooting range, though it was parked some 500 m off)

Toughened glass is cooled at different rates - the surface being cooled more quickly. This puts the whole glass sheet under tension which gives it its strength. Its the 'tension' in the glass that shows up as a pattern when you look at the glass through polarising lenses.

Any flaw or damage to the glass can release all this 'tension' so the glass explodes

I think......

Yes R-2 that is why one of the inner panels exploded on one of my double glazed windows, or so I was told

TC do you have any luck with anything
I used to have the misfortune of owning a renault megane (shaking its ass) that fractured the rear screen twice once quite dramaticaly his was put down to a electrical fault (IN A RENAULT NEVER) apparently the heated rear window switched itself on when it was raining, strange but true.
