| This thread is about: Badge status, it's in General Discussion at the Honda Civic forum Civinfo; OK. Must remember bin bags! Also some 'R Type' badges! Like a Type R but faster. Don't worry, no offence (I'm 26!)... | ||

I would go with the Freelander due to the fact, I like it in that colour and the car looks better...........Freelanders did take a bit of a slagging off when they had that Cyclinder head gasket issue with the 1.8 petrol models that the Rovers had and some folk still remember this when purchasing a car in that class.
But if I was buying a 4x4, I would go for a Range Rover or VW Touareg - I almost bought one of these instead of the CTR....brand new one with delivery millage was the same price as the CTR! It was cheap cause the new one was due out Last edited by angie4m; 10th May 2008 at 00:54. |

I don't think badge snobbery directly relates to picking a car that is obviously better. I think the Skoda, Seat, VW and Audi is a really good example. All make nice cars.
Many people would choose a base model Audi A3 over an Octavia vRS. My friend has said vRS, which is the same price as a standard (as appose to Sport/S line/S3, i.e bottom spec) 1.8 A3. OK, the A3 looks better and is a nicer place to be, but a vRS versus bottom spec A3. I'd take the Skoda. |

LOL! I remember as a kid I always thought the Freelander would be the perfect 'vet car' for me, the whole bursting out of the containers into the desert had me sold! Oh what an impressionable child I was
I can't deny that I'm swayed by badge status, but at the end of the day it's the whole package that matters, and the brand is only a small part of it. For example the Audi A3/BMW 1 Series are considered the upper market rivals of the Civic, but IMO they are butt ugly in comparison to the civic so despite the BMW/Audi brand they really weren't any competition at all for me! Having said that I quite fancy the RWD of the BMW Quote:

The comparison I was making was that the 2 cars look pretty much the same. Both are reasonably well built. But on one hand you have a 'badge status' 3 year old version. And on the other hand you have a brand new non badge status version. Both available for circa £15K. So. If you had £15K in your pocket and were out to buy a 4x4 (and let's assume for the moment that there are no other options available), which of the two would we go for? And assuming you could find one in a colour you liked |

Hyundai Santa Fe - LOVELY looking car! Honda CR-V Kia Sportage I wouldn't even consider a Jeep or Land Rover/Range Rover... I'd want it to get to the end of the road once I'd bought it! Range Rovers are for the queen and drug dealers anyway... or maybe business execs thinking they look cooler than in a saloon...! And that orange colour - I think it's nice! It's like the orange ST's - you either like it or you don't. |

And the BMW diesel - either 174 or 201 bhp on the 120d or 123d, and getting 58 & 54mpg still... she's laughing! |

Freelander
Oh how true Angie.
I'm too put off by the old Freelander, if you left them in the sun too long the head gaskets used to blow! |

Its quite strange how some people like one car but not another take for example I had a Mini, loved it...it looked like a toy car which kids adored and when I saw the Civic I knew it was going to be my next car as it was the only car after the Mini that looked great (in that bracket) Quite a few ex Mini owners on here who think similar, yet there are others who don't like the Mini but like the Civic........but then the Civic is a proper car for 4 adults unlike a Mini which became a 2 seater in my case Last edited by angie4m; 10th May 2008 at 12:06. |

I did think your comment might have been slightly tongue in cheek angie, but couldn't resist picking up on it
The brand new 4x4 in the pics I posted is indeed a Kia Sportage |

TT You can't (yet) get a three year old new shape Freelander, so at three years old it would still be an old style one (make sure you get a TD4 to ensure the engine will outlive the tax disc!!)..... |

Aren't they the ones that have gone back to the good old days and are now using top quality stuff for the interiors etc. They said they were losing business due to cost cutting. At least one company is listening to customers and quite frankly for the first time in my life I would pic a merc over a BMW. The new C class is stunning!!!!! I'm in love with that |
