[Engine] Possible new owner...

Hey!

I'm new to the forums although i've been lurking for a while now. Great site!

I really like the new Civic and interested in a Type-S 2.2GT. Now, the thing is, fuel prices these days. At the moment i'm driving a 1.6 Fiesta Zetec-S and putting around £40 nearly every 2 weeks and getting no more than about 340 miles to a tank.
If i go to the 2.2 diesel engine would it be better than this or not? Im not a very heavy-footed driver, only in some places when i need to pull out or ovetake, otherwise i'm a calm 'normal' driver.

Sorry if this is a 'stupid' question but i'm not very 'clued-up' about cars etc.

Really need to be more specific-how many miles in your 2 weeks and size(no of gallons ) of your car's tank.

My Type S 2.2 gives me 41-44 mostly around town and 48+ longer journeys

My 1.8 gives 38.7 average running around and 44.1 on a run, so with the cost of diesel compared to petrol a 1.8 petrol could be as cheap to run and its also cheaper to buy and does not have a rattly old engine that sounds like a combine harvester being driven through a scrap yard.

My 1.8 gets 30mpg on my daily drive to work but i have a seriously heavy right foot. When driving around while at work I go everywhere as slow as possible (leaves less time for work in between driving

)and get an average of 46mpg.

edit - i get an average of 320 miles out of a tank.. lowest was 270 highest was 350..

I'm getting 33.4mpg out of my 1.8. Don't know what my average miles before I fill up as I've only filled up twice.

Had my 2.2 Sport for a month now and according to the computer I've averaged 50mpg (not much town driving). I'm in the process of checking what the real mpg is as opposed to computer reading, which I think may be a little over optimistic.

The Ford Fiesta tank is 45 litres, so 5 less than ours. I'm guessing that the post writer doesn't do very many miles to and from work so the cars probably just warmed up by the time its stopped again and probably in stop start traffic? Which would impact the mpg they get

but then neither does the 2.2

roun town I get low 40mpg, on a run high 40s, overall average is about 44mpg week in week out.

This usuallt equates to filling up at around 430 miles

Do it - you won't regret it!

The 2.2 Type S GT is a great choice.

I do a 17 mile round trip to work on b-roads and about mile of stop start traffic.

I think i will do it and i'm from North Wales.
I just need to find a used one around here first or I suppose i could go as far as North West England. Will see how it goes.

Hi there Welshie07. Welcome

There are loads of threads on this site concerning the petrol diesel debate and there will not be a winner.

At the end of the day, you should try and test drive both and make your own mind up. Having said that the 2.2 is the better engine

Nah mate, Type-S for me....i think the insurance would be bit to much on a type-r. Im 20. I've had some quotes for the type-s and the cheapest one was £700 something with 1yr ncb.

Who the hell was that quote with! Is the insurance just cheaper in Wales?!?! lol

If I drive in towns and A/B roads I can get 38-44mpg out of mine - and the trip computer works it out to about 400-450 miles a tank.
If I drive on motorways at 60-80 I can get 54+ mpg and CAN get 550 out of a full tank...
